I agree about the Jenny Westbury, so it's not just you who is the sucker. And the keyboard songs could be better; they are just mixed poorly. Except for that bouncy, dancy bit in "Worry Minds." I don't know what's going on there.
i get dibd on the next Guilloteens show. you've had the last 2. MAXIMUM ROCK UND ROLL MOOTHERFUXXERS!!!!
I keep wanting to write a comment here, something about how live music is so much better than recorded music, but I just know the minute I do someone will give me a CD of some incredible recorded music that could never be reproduced live, and I will once again have to eat my shoe. So I won't 'cause I'm running out of shoes.
I'm with you on the live vs. studio. You'll probably hear about a lot of live albums from me on this here site. Those FFG guys, man. I wrote something about this on my blog a while back (I think). Last Christmas Break I had THE most fantastic Texas musical adventure. I got to go to JR Delgado's 50th Birthday Bash where old punks were coming out of the wood work like leather-wearing zombies. I got to go to Jim Purdell's 50th Birthday Bash where Blarin' Aron the Banjo Baron whipped up a mess of frenzied CCR rock and then backed Jim on his version of Spinal Tap's Big Bottoms. I got to see Leeza Harrington bang the drums until my ears bled and I got to play a New Year's Eve show with JW Americana where I saw too much of Shane2000's balls. Even got to play in Austin with the Crack Pipes and the Ron Tittber Band's debut show. BUT, THE show of the holidays was FFG at the Proletariat. And with everything else going on that's saying something. Did their deal with French Kiss go through? That seemed like a great deal for them. FK has another great band Les Savvy Fav. Love to see those guys together. That's one band that could go on bc or ad FFG and it'd be OK with me.
Jenny Westbury's keyboard songs were the ones I really liked. I think I've always liked it when off-the-shelf casio sounds are re-purposed for actual songwriting. The kicker with Westbury is that it doesn't sound ironic; it sounds like part of the texture of the song. Period-piece twee or something. Anyway, I don't know her and I still haven't seen her live, but I've been listening to her Myspace songs since someone posted the link on the HUH board last week. Really good stuff.
We had Jenny on our show a coupla weeks ago, right before her Prol gig. I was blown away by her unassuming style and her forthright tunes. I think she has a bright future - IF she will put forth the effort! She doesn't seen too keen on pursuing her music or promoting herself (she is studying photography). Hopefully she will keep playing! phil / kpftradioACTIVE
