Ya can’t fit it into the Subject Line but the full title of this post is actually:
2006: what cd’s you might find on the floor board of my car if I had cd’s in my car but I actually use an mp3 player but you get the idea LIST comprised of five cd’s, each accompanied by two sentences (numbers set by the roll of a die).
I don’t acquire enough stuff produced within a given year to produce a Best of the Stuff Produced Within A Given Year list. But so,
I can list the things that got to my ear canal this year that stayed in there the longest.
And so,
with apologies in advance to anybody totally over one of these albums
and
in no particular order
the 2006
WCYMFOTFBOMCIIHCIMCBIAUAMPBYGTILCOFCEABTS(NSBTROAD)
1. The Evens – The Evens (2005): Sometimes an album falls into your lap that musically and lyrically is as pleasing to one’s olfactory as one’s own . Yeah well anyway, this euphoria is tempered by fatalistic lyrics.
2. Les Savy Fav – Plagues & Snakes (2006): LSF’s only 2006 State-side release is an online download “EP.” If you need a new anthem (and you do but will you listen noooo), try on the song Raging In The Plague Age.
3. The Gun Club – Miami (1982): Thanks to a well done New York Night Train bio-review of the Gun Club’s Kid Congo Powers ((complete with over an hour of oral history from the kid)) I step back in time for this influential Los Angeles rock band. When rock meets country, I wish more of it would kiss like this.
4. The Original Brothers and Sisters of Love – H.O.M.E.S., Vol. 1 (2001): Poppy ambitious regional stuff from Michigan that I first encountered searching online music stores for songs containing the words “church bus.” I only found this here one; and so
along with the other great song on this album “Vintage Schwinn Enthusiast” (and me being a vintage Schwinn riding S.O.B.)
it has come to pass that TOBASOL touched a nerve.
I duct tape and spit them two sentences together didn’t I?
5. !!! (Chk Chk Chk) – Louden Up Now (2004) : Music to drive by late at night on gas station coffee. You can
tell the President to suck my f*cking dick too.
Runner up or – if I had rolled a six…
6. Curlew – North America (1985): Found this gem at the WFMU Record Fair while THE LATEST was on tour. Fred Frith, George Cartwright, Tom Cora and some other freeeks doing some crazy New York jazz rock thingey with big drums and xxtra sexaphone.
and for the Headbangers’ Ball corner…
7. Russian Circles – Russian Circles Live at Schubas (2005): From the nifty Emusic/Schubas Live! series, this is newish instru-metal out of Chicago. Man, I can get down with that new instru-metal sound.
Now please go. Go now
and
suck a dick.

The only thing that I miss about not having a car is not having the car stereo.
Was wondering whatever happened to Ian MacKaye… and there he is… in the Evens. Going to have to find a copy of that somewhere. !!! was one of those concerts that sold out and slipped by me this summer. Would have liked to have seen them. I have that Curlew cd on the upper row of shelving in my hallway somewhere. As for the rest of your list, Kilian, I’m going to have to do some due diligence to see what else I’ve been missing. Cheers.
P.S. is all of this sucking business a metaphor for something I’m not quite understanding?
Originally I wrote of the Evens that it expresses the way I’m feeling musically and lyrically – “there’s no ‘around the corner’ any more.” Listen to this then watch An Inconvenient Truth.
!!! and Les Savy Fav are definitely great driving music. Curlew makes great dish washing music.
The first “suck” is a !!! lyric preceded by like I give a sh*t,like I give a f*ck (which is preceded by a series of variations on theme).
The second “suck” is my trademark signature don’t steal it.
The third suck is air.
Les Savy Fav rock the party like no band ever. I can’t believe I didn’t know they had a new release this year, however electronic it may be.
Kilian, thanks for posting those links to new (to me) music. I was able to listen to the Russian Circles myspace songs, but in order to listen to more than 10 seconds of Les Savy Fav I would’ve had to register for some crap i’m not really interested in and honestly don’t feel like dealing with. Then the TOBASOL myspace player seems to be cutting out constantly (as myspace players seem prone to do). I had never heard of any of these bands and woul’dve like to give it a listen. This is not the first time this has happened in posts on this blog (not just yours). Isnt there a good way to get songs on the posts that can be played, since i think a big part of this blog, for me at least is being able to listen to songs. Wouldnt it be better to just posts MP3s of some of the songs?
I hear you anon.
As far as the Les Savy Fav mp3 goes – I looked long and hard for a freebee because French Kiss Records put it up as a freebee several months ago. Unfortunately it’s no longer available out there for free and actually FKR did a deal with emusic so I believe that is the only place you can get it. That’s why I linked there. Welcome to the new age I guess.
Now the good news (hopefully)…
NAP is putting together a weekly podcast so you can hear some of the stuff we talk about. I’m putting a Gun Club song up there and a TOBASOL song as well and I think I’ll ask the podmaster to put Les Savy Fav on there as well.
The podcast can be linked from the right hand side at top on main nap page.
Anyway you’re right. The more we can make the music available the better.
Hi Kilian
When I first read this post I was sad. I thought something had happened to you like a head injury. I thought, “No. Not Kilian. He was the last decent guy. He can’t join us. He has to stay out there fending off the Devil, while us feeble cursers kind of wallow inside of the circle.”
I have written this music down, and as Soon as I have a chance I will check it out. I remember you mentioning the Evens to me back when we were first in touch and I spaced it.
Ok BYE
Claire
It’s rough Claire. It’s rough.
EM, I think its all that damn chicago sausage Kilian has been consuming.
I’ll second the Evens, they are quite lovely.
