Beatland: A Quick Look at Irish Beat
Ireland: For most of the 1960s and the following decade, live music was dominated by that peculiarly Irish phenomenon, the showband . These groups of neatly-coiffed, shiny-suited cover-version merchants toured the country, playing their selections in vast ballrooms (barely a few of which survive today). Enthusiasm tended to supersede talent, but their regimentation did provide a training ground for future stars such as Rory Gallagher and Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy's first guitarist).
Irish Beat Spins off: The most successful group was Bluesville , led by Ian Whitcomb, an American studying at Trinity College, which had a US top ten hit with You Turn Me On . Meanwhile, in Belfast, George Ivan Morrison had got together with guitarist Billy Harrison to form Them.
Three Jolly Little Dwarfs: The Orange Machine (Dublin) Pye 1968. This was one of the best-ever "psychedelic" singles and reached No.14 in the Irish charts. The B-side, “Real Life Permanent Dream” has made this single much sought-after by record-collectors worldwide. A copy (with rare picture-sleeve) sold for GB£65.00 (approximately Euro 95.00) on eBay recently. Ernie Durkan later joined The Gentry, then Buckshot, Tommy Kinsella joined the Cotton Mill Boys and drummer Jimmy Greally became a successful radio broadcaster. Lead guitarist w

Whoa Thin Lizzy. WHOA Them. But Killian your columns don't translate into Mac Safari, Netscape, or FLock browsers so I'm not sure what applies to who as far as the MP3s go. Who sings what? Ok back to my headphones. Regardless the jolly dwarves song is fun.
here ya go...
dwarves is the Orange Machine
did ye get healed? is Van Morrison
you turn me on is bluesville with Ian Whitcomb
karoake thin lizzy is karoake the boys are back in town
There also seems to be a version of "Three Jolly Little Dwarfs" by Tomorrow. Do you know who did it originally?
Hi Kilian
How is this entry supposed to look? How does it look on your computer? Could you take a screen shot for me? Is this insulting?
Claire
i just figured it out! its written on invisible ink. nice trick trickster!
Clay - I didn't know about the Tommorrow version. I figure the Tommorrow version is the original. The two cuts were released only a year apart.
I've always appreciated how unabashadly young bands from before the 70's would cover current songs. Reminds me that I want to get a project going doing covers from my friend's bands.
Anyway there's not much out there about the Orange Machine so best of luck pinning this one down. I'd be curious to know if you do.
As far as the post format...
I wrote the section titles but the section bodies are direct text from the sites travelotica.com and irishshowbands.net - only the font color is white, blending in with the white background, except for the info I wanted visible.
The section titles and the section info are inverted colors.
The format and the Wednesday logo are nods to James Joyce. Joyce was an experimental writer. His most famous work is set on a single day - Wednesday June 16th, 1904. Bloomsday is a secular holiday in Dublin.
Just playing around with what blogspot can do.
Ha. Yeah If yu highlight the invisible text you can see it.
i like the experimental posts and graphics.
I get it now. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, I have been catching up on some downloading all day. Now I have to go learn what blogspot is all about. OK bye.
That was easily the most retarded thing I've said all week.
There are these compilations called PSYCHEDELIC PSTONES with some "Orange Machine" stuff on them...There's 3 volumes as far as I know...it's just more NUGGETS type stuff...
Yeah, there's some OM stuff out there but not much background info.
I have Three Jolly Little Dwarfs on an Irish Beat compilation cd which doesn't include You Turn Me On and frankly isn't particularly interesting except for the OM novelty stuff. There's another OM song on the comp called Dr. Cripping's Waiting Room. I might submit that to the podcast.
I ended up submiting a wolfetones song in gaelic to the podcast and another beat song from the By-Tones.
The gaelic number should help understand why the Irish weren't too slow to give up the native tongue.
