must find time to do laundry

This week is going to have to be brief because next week and the week after will be extra long. As you may already know, Doug, Justin, Conor and I along with my friends Kate & Kate will be headed to that festival we had mentioned in previous posts. I’ve been busy trying to appease my clients by finishing all of their work before leaving and that is why I’ve been relatively absent from the comments section. Something else called the ‘Napsquisite Corpse’ seems to have started up, and it sounds great, but I missed an email in there somewhere, so I’m not quite sure what is going on. Am looking forward to the results, though.

Now, if you would all be so kind as to help me out, I have a few dilemmas coming up which anyone out there in the ether can help me resolve by voting one way or another in the comments section. Since I do not operate like a true democracy, a persuasive argument will sway me more than sheer vote count.

1.) A.) The White Stripes or B.) Fujiya and Miyagi

2.) A.) Girls Against Boys + one of the later bands in either B or C; B.) Modest Mouse/Low/Built to Spill; or C.) Reinhard Voight/Tok Tok/Luke Slater

3.) A.) The Good, The Bad and The Queen or B.) Isis

4.) A.) The Buzzcocks or B.) Nathan Fake

These are all conflicts in the schedule for me, i.e. both A and B will be playing at the same time, so I can’t go see both bands. It’s one or the other. Of course, I’ll probably end up going wherever my friends want to go. Inevitably, we will get separated because someone will go buy beer and then the band will end and everyone will move. Or, someone will decide someone is crap and they want to go check out the other stage and then they won’t make it back. Or, the bathroom line will be 10 light years long. And, text messaging won’t work because the whole system will be clogged. So, I have to be prepared to make some decisions on my own.

Tonight, I’ve been talked into going to see the Jesus and Mary Chain. I started to tell my friend Scott “I’m not even sure I liked the Jesus and May Chain when they were popu….” He interrupted with an emphatic and lawyerly statement “But, it’s the Jesus and Mary Chain and they haven’t been together for twelve years.” Somehow I lost the debate about whether or not I had the option of staying home tonight. We’re also going to see Bebel Gilberto and Ben Watt this week. (Ben is half of Everything But the Girl, also did great Sunday evening club nights called Lazy Dog at the Notting Hill Arts Club in London which were a lot of fun). I need to do my laundry.

It's a stretch to say that The Jesus and Mary Chain were popular at any point, but they were pretty awesome at the height of their powers. Or they were on record--live not so much. I bought Darklands and Love and Rockets' Earth Sun Moon on the same day in high school. I can't really listen to the latter anymore, but the former, is still pretty good. What more can you ask from an album?

Maybe you'll get to see one of the Reid brothers punch the other one. Seeing that would be worth sitting through almost anything.

I'd go b's all the way except on the last one in which I might flip a coin.

And w-o-w. Forget laundry.

B,C,A,A Avoid the obvious one's. Isis is painfully dull live. Plus, we're talking Paul Simenon here, so no contest on that one. The White Stripessssszzzzzz, forget them. And shit lady, the Buzzcocks!

I think you may have a point, John. I was having a tough time with #3 because I think J,D,C + K,K will all want to go see Modest Mouse, Low and Built to Spill. But, I don't think I should go to that one 'cause I'll be resentful that not everyone appreciates Reinhard Voigt as much as I do. And, Luke Slater is a walking piece of history. I have this 'In Order to Dance' compilation from 1994 with a track of his on it which sort of changed how I listen to "dance music."

The Jesus and Mary Chain were just ok. They were sort of smug that so many people had turned out. I couldn't tell whether or not they gave a shit about their old songs.

re:#2

I would see GVSB and then scoot to see Built to Spill and/or Luke Slater.

I never saw ISIS live, but judging from Doug's post a while back, I'd probably feel at home in the sea of black.

joke.

I would skip Buzzcocks, like I skip most of those older punk bands. The whole event just depresses me. Aging heroes+ new kids+expensive water... no thanks. Though, if you have the constitution, it would be worth it to see I guess. I wonder how the crowds will be? That's half the battle in deciding who to go see.. for me at least, and since it's not in the U.S. you probably can't loose with any of those choices. Ahh... hypothetical show seeing.

I have one Fujiya & Miyagi song on my iPod, and it sounds promising though nothing I've fallen in love yet. I left halfway through the White Stripes at Big Day Out because I had food poisoning; I like them ok, and they have great music videos, but I've never felt compelled to buy an album or anything.

I am keen to see Modest Mouse on the grounds that their new album is pretty great, but I have seen them a bunch of times and their live shows aren't always as solid as I'd like. (Though I've yet to see them with the Johnny Marr powered lineup.) The other two I can live without on account of having seen them a bunch of times and not being passionate about either of their recent albums, though I'm sure I'd enjoy them.

Has Girls Against Boys done anything in the past ten years that was worthwhile? (An honest question; I gave up on them after HOUSE OF GVSB, at which point they felt like a caricature of themselves. But I did like CRUISE YOURSELF quite a bit at one point in history.)

I don't think Isis is as boring as John thinks they are live, but then again I was looking at the backs of people's heads most of the time and just grooving on the music.

A friend told me that the Buzzcocks reunion shows are basically everything you would possibly want if you ever wanted to see the Buzzcocks, so I'm very keen for that plus I have no idea who Nathan Fake is.

I've only heard two Bebel Gilberto tracks but I really liked them. Please report back.

I agree on the GVSB summation of their music of late. I never saw them live, and would like to because so long ago, I used to dig on them.

If I went to a show now, I'd likely just end up in places where I could have my back to a wall and people watch and the appreciation of the music would suffer from my personality disorders anyways. So, my take on what any of you fine people should see... has nothing to do with what you should do at all.

Just take lots of pictures!

While Isis is rather polished (which is really a rather dubious honor sometimes, especially for a post-hardcore band), their live DVD is like watching Radiohead dumbed down for the Emo set. And consider that I have, and generally like, Panopticon. They just have a tendency to hit me like a nude emperor on parade.
