oh man, I have no sound at work.
NO JIM WHITE?
I can only really get into a drum solo if it's in rhythm with the song... I've heard a lot of those drum solos where the guy just totally goes off, and that's a bunch of silliness, but a badass drum solo where some part of the kit is always holding the rhythm just blows me away. If I had to pick one guy as the drum solo king, it'd be Art Blakey. That man sounds like thunder on the drums.
R.I.P.
thank you. this has given me shortness of breathes. [fanning self]. i had no idea that stevie wonder was a wonder at drums. makes sense though since the piano is technically a percussion instrument (if 3rd grade music class is correct).
and the real deal made me want to dance around. but the dog is looking at me funnily enough.
man, now i know what song i wanna submit to nap cast. the first four beats of 'yesterdays numbers' by the flaming groovies...boy, oh boy! if i ever learn to drum...it'll be 'teenage head' on my headphones!
After the first one, I was going to say "I've never liked drum solos" ... but by the time Mr. Wonder rolls out his thing, I had to whistle a different tune. Still don't like 'em much in general, though. (Actually I'm rarely a big fan of solos in general, they tend to be an excuse for showing off instead of extending the emotion of the song.)
Well researched or stumbled upon or whatever, sir.
I think one of the reasons why Stevie was considered a Wonder is that he played ALL the instruments on a lot of his early albums when he was just a teen... may have kept doing that, but I know long before Prince was recording whole albums himself, Stevie Wonder was doing it...
Stevie played drums in many of his records. In the making of Songs of the Key of Life he actually jokingly complains how he didnt get credit for playing drums in Sir Duke... I think the video above shows that many others considered 'better' drummers could've taken some lessons from Stevie. I totally agree with you DD, if it becomes about showing off and losing the feel of the song, then it just seems like a waste. The principal measure I look for when qualifying whether a drum solo is good or not is how much can a drummer loosen the groove and still come back to it without loosing us along the way.
and rosa, thank you, thank you, thank you. your continued enthusiasm is priceless and very often makes my week here at hte nap. And i dont know about 3rd grade music class, but ask any latin band player and they'll tell you that the piano is a percussion instrument.
