We Are the Dying World
In the book American Psycho, Patrick Bateman is a 1980's Wall Street serial killer who eventually wishes to confess. However he has no unique identity within his peer group. This anonymity creates unplanned alibis.
In the movie American Psycho, the director believes that if she had only one scene to depict the entire work it would be the scene where Patrick Bateman removes a mud mask to reveal his own face of which she says yet another mask.
My favorite scene would be a toss up between the scene where Bateman chooses not to murder his secretary with a framing gun and the scene where he murders his rival while reviewing the career of Huey Lewis and the News.
In the scene with the secretary, Bateman doesn't kill her because the telephone rings. It is a reality jolt that takes Bateman out of his frenzy.
In this youtube clip, the director claims that the blood splattering only on one side of the actor's face was not originally intended. It is an unintentional cosmetic effect. If you pay attention you'll notice that the victim doesn't remember Bateman's name. If you notice that, then you may also notice that Bateman answers with the wrong name. But in Bateman's case of misidentification, it seems that he is playing a little joke because seconds later he uses his victim's correct name, Paul, to draw Paul's attention to the fact that he is about to be hacked to death. Bateman may be coming to a realization about the vagueness of his existence at this point but he hasn't completely collapsed and come out the other side just yet.
warning: this scene from AP contains blood, strong language and the song "Hip to Be Square."

Everything ok up in Chi-town there tiger?
They're in H-town these days, John. Remember, Axiom reunion and all that...
That explains everything.
houston has a way of bringing out the american psycho in all of us.
I'll be okay sniff. Thanks for asking. Typing is oh so tough.
ringy-ding, killian. ringy-ding.
I read that book while traveling on a greyhound bus with a bunch of convicts out of Huntsville, from Austin to Cincinnati. It was pretty unsettling. The book scene where he fucks the girl's skull or something to that effect was pretty shocking. the movie just didn't translate. I mean, we don't have too many major motion pictures that feature that kind of violence as well as actual sex. I can't imagine how different the world would be if sex was more acceptable than violence in the arts. How fucked up is that. And America sucks the big one when it comes to keeping everyone oppressed with the hang ups about nudity. What are the numbers truly, when it comes to exposure to nudity and sexually related crimes in different countries. I would wager we rape with the best of them. And I'm not saying that rape is solely a sex act.. and not violence, but come on. Did anyone see Necromantic?
Oh yes, I've seen it.
and the name of the act is "The Aristocrats"!
I personally like Bale better in Reign of Fire than American Psycho. There's much better axe wielding in that flick too beacause it's more Frazetta-like. Wooderson's great in that one.
As far as Huey Lewis goes, I got Sports as a birthday present and loved The Heart Of Rock & Roll way too much. It's fucking true though . . . the heart of rock and roll is still beating . . . in Cleveland no doubt.
Go Chief Wahoo!
Who are you people?
Na but really, I wouldn't debate you on the translation thing. They are two totally separate pieces of work made with different motives. I deliberately wanted to separate the book from the movie in this post.
I appreciate the book more because of the movie.
Also, I appreciate the fact that somebody put this scene on youtube. I appreciate this one scene as a stand alone.
I also appreciate that my coffee is ready. See ya..
Oh also, Brad Tyer wrote a nice obit.
Sorry to triple comment here but I just have to say...
What the hell with the HP?
I only read the Houston rags when I'm coming in to town but that's enough to see that they aren't getting any better. A lot of folks on this site know that I've had my beef with JNL's lackluster writing in the past regarding Michael Hagaa. And that was nothing against MH really. But does MH sit in the HP lobby or something?
For a more personable account of the Axiom days see Greg Beets blog. You'll note that it is especially a "more personable" account to me!
i got to the part in the book where our psycho pulls out a couple of rats to start eating a part of a woman's.. uh, you know, and, well, that was about all this reader could take.
What's all this hub-bub about Batman?
