The recording was pretty much created by the studio engineer who was a latin music guy from the bronx, so the beat street angle might not be too far off. when i was in NY i was really not into american music at all. by 1998, i only felt a huge dispointment with the 80s indie rock scene (meat puppets, husker du, replacements, butthole surfers), and its subversion by 'alternative' rock and all the post nirvana crap. So all the new music i was listening to was coming from south/central america, the caribbean, and the latin hoods in NY. Lots of early rock en español, reggeaton, afro-caribbean hybrids, more traditional folk styles... until i got to NC i didnt really listen to much new music in english, nothing that really influenced me in any way worht mentioning.
