Extravaganza

To follow up on some of the comments from Doug's last post, it struck me that the reason Springsteen and other older rock types are performing with Arcade Fire is that they have no other outlet for their music. It isn't so much they they share an aristocratic bent (though I bet that helps), as it is that radio won't play the new stuff. So if Springsteen wants to convince people to buy his albums, he has to get his mug in front of people's eyes somehow. Jumping on stage with indie darlings is a fairly effective way to do that. The alternative is to go on teevee and hawk Cadillacs like that paragon of artistic integrity, Dylan.

I went to see Spoon with The New Pornographers last night and the one word review is: meh. A longer review would have to mention that The New Pornographers enjoyed the presence of one Neko Case and had she not been there I might have gotten in a good nap. Case's vocals are very fine, but not enough to outweigh the bland pop behind them. I don't mean to say that any of the Pornographers' songs were bad, just that none of them were great. Or even, you know, better than average. They did, however, have a fancy sign made of individual bulbs, which was like something straight out of the
Elvis 68 Comeback show.*

Spoon were a little better. They have finally figured out how to play to a larger audience. The previous couple times I had seen them, which mind you were at festivals, they shambled through a set that seemed devoid of energy. I watched as eager fans actually worked to appreciate them, but finally lost interest because the show was so lacking. Last night Spoon had enough presence to fill the larger stage. They also brought along a subtle light show that had them playing in front of a brilliantly glowing background, while they were mostly in shadow. It was dramatic, yet tasteful. It might sound like they are ready for the arenas, but they aren't totally pro. Britt flubbed some lyrics at a couple points and gushed that the horn section (an extravagance for any tour) had played with Prince. And when Dan Bejar
, from The New Pornographers, came out to sing his "It's Gonna Take an Airplane" with them, Britt asked the audience to video it and put it on YouTube.** As good as they've gotten, I still miss the solid bass playing and harmonies of their old bass player, Josh.

*Elvis also did that song with the Devil.

**There was a guy just in front of me who did record the song, but it hasn't turned up on YouTube yet. Though here is a different performance of it.

I was just wondering if next week's post couldn't go ahead and be about some other totally uninteresting waste of recording time like maybe that douche from Dashboard Confessional, or maybe even Blue October, or some such shit.

I'm just sayin'. For Chrissakes...

I'm not sure. Five maybe? Spoon's bass players are a bit like Spinal Tap's drummers. The original one was a woman who also did good harmonies that made the first album sound an awful lot like The Pixies. I guess maybe that's why I always want to hear harmonies when I listen to Spoon.

Next week I plan to start a long series of posts about my issues dealing with anger.

Well, as long as you stay away from my issues with anger you should be able to keep that post under a thousand pages.

just personal opinions-i love the new pornographers, and that being said their new album (challengers) is flatter than the keyboard i'm typing this on. sad.

i never got spoon, and not for lack of trying.

i might be wrong on this, but i think spoon evolved from an early 90's austin band called The Grieves, who in fact took their name from a pixies song.

congrats ramon and all on year one. i now check this blog everyday.

one last thing-hear's an idea: how about a week where the theme is anger. even the more laid back contributors could find something to vent about. and the podcast for the week could be all industrial noise and grindcore metal. cheers!

If the podcast for the week could be all Industrial Noise and Grindcore Metal.. then the theme couldn't be anger. Foul Ball. Really.

But this DOES bring up an interesting question. Just what songs or tunes do you clowns consider to be "angry"?

You could take that anywhere. Like I have been reading about these religious fucking shitbrains.

"Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags.”

That garbage makes me angry. So, let me shift gears here and play my angry music... hmmm. What will I select? Something to calm my nerves? Something to be good soundtrack as I make Molotov cocktails... to throw at... or maybe I need a little peace-talking music. Something to make me feel like I belong or could even hope to thrive in a fucking wasteland like this Earth.

If things aren't TOO bad, I would go for pianos and violins. If they're bad... I go for trance. If they're really bad.. I avoid music altogether.

hey electramummy, this clown is sorry he hit a foul ball your way. my musical suggestion was off the cuff and intended more for atmosphere than substance. (i'm tired...i hope that made sense)

new pornos: i liked seeing bejar and case.

spoon: that was the first time i've seen them hold their own on a large stage. unfortunately, their current bass player might be the worst one they've ever had. the dude could not find swing on a playground.

i refuse to believe that a band as big as spoon, based first in austin and then in portland, can't find a decent bass player. one with good hair even.

I think the bass player is pretty great. His bass lines actually move around quite a bit and the fuzz touches are nice. His other band White Whale is pretty cool too.

I think that were the devil himself to foist his engorged member into the waiting maw of Spoon's literate snoozelord, then perhaps something of almost tolerable substance might come of it.

I'm starting to understand now why Justin considers EXILE ON MAIN STREET an "unlistenable album with too much filler"...you've deliberately bought tickets to see SPOON and THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS? More than once? And you were surprised that they were "lacking"? Oh, my lord...

I would say The New Pornographers were lacking, yes. I would say Spoon were actually better than I expected them to be. I've seen Spoon quite a few times and they have often been pretty good. Sure, they are sometimes really bad, but that's the way it goes.

Have you actually seen either one of them, Matthew, or are you just talking out of your ass when you speak so authoritatively about how bad they are?

As for Exile, it should have been about as long as Sticky Fingers, which is a far superior album. Not everything Mick and Mick and Keith did was gold.

In Dylan's defense (why am I always coming to Dylan's defense anyway?)...he's really hawking his radio show and anyway there's nothing about Dylan's character that makes him above hawking anything. And of the many good things I'd say about Dylan "paragon of artistic integrity" is not one of them. He's an opportunistic mf.

As for Springsteen - he may not have a radio outlet but as the article you linked points out, he'd already sold over 500,000 copies of his new album without radio support. I don't know, I see a genuine connection between Springsteen's music and Arcade Fire - really if they played full sets together it would be a bit too much.
