The story of the Spoon song is that when I asked them to be on my show, Britt jokingly insisted that he get some chicken fingers in exchange. This was the last song they played, so I guess he figured that was the time to ask for them. Needless to say he got no chicken fingers.
The Last Wish song is also live at KTRU. The Last Wish was a high school band featuring that guy from Blue October that Cramer likes so much. I think this song sounds remarkably like De Schmog's "100 Miles," and it was very probably their influence. So basically what I'm saying is that Blue October is Kilian's fault.
I had to google the Last Wish because I'd forgotten about them, but yeah nice kids. I'm not sure if it's not just a young drummer thing but his style is a lot like my brother's old style - he only plays Screw beats now.
Here are a couple of weird videos I took at the Battery Park NY Spoon gig this Summer. Spoon was a bit flat at this performance but I really enjoyed it. Everything was subdued really. It rained hard that day especially just before the concert. Tricia and I couldn't get anybody to go with us because they all thought for sure that it would be rained out. But I held out that if the rain stopped they'd do it and it turned out pretty cool because the crowd was small and the post-rain evening air was nice.
Speaking of Spoon, H-town redux posted a recording of a solo show Britt did at Mary Janes in 2002. I saw him play solo with a cassette deck at Rudz many many years ago. Back then he always had trouble keeping his band together because, typical Austin, each member was in a hundred different bands. So he did some shows anyway. He's got a fire you have to respect.
Justin - I really dig that you're posting from your catalog of ktru shows. You still doing anything with ktru?
You know, I saw Spoon in New York that one summer you visited me when I was living there, Kilian. They played at Castle Clinton, which is in Battery Park. It's a much smaller venue than the regular stage, so the crowd was smaller than the one in your video--and there hadn't even been any rain. I remember when they would play to crowds of ten at dive bars. Their audience has been slow to materialize, but it has little by little. So yeah, you do have to admire Britt's fire. I've seen lots of bands give up after a year or two of dismal audience response, but Spoon went through like ten years of that kind of response and stuck with it. Or at least the response was dismal outside of Austin. I'm sure Austin was supportive; they always are, however good or bad the music is.
I'm not really doing anything with ktru now, outside the occasional computer work. I think I've had my fill of radio for now, as it just doesn't seem interesting to me anymore.
im trying to look for the nap podcast episode 42 and cant find it somone like took it down from the site while i was trying to download i think cause im dying to know what last wish song is on there
