Six Things You May Not Have Seen

What follows are several things that might be worth discussing:

1. There is apparently a
music scene in Brazil that thrives by deliberately allowing music to be pirated.

2. Prince, though, is having
nothing to do with any of the piracy nastiness. I can't figure him out. First he gives his album away in a newspaper and now he won't let you post images of him. What an enigma this Prince wants us to think he is.

3. Is it piracy if you just sorta
borrow stuff and make your own music from it? Here somebody has traced Stereolab's influences similar to, but much better than, the Wilco version I did earlier this year. Watch them all.

4. Find out what's popular
where you live. Prepare to be disappointed when you do.

5. I discovered
this about a year ago. It combines music with Pong. I especially like the Satie. I can and have listened to that one for hours.

6. Not especially related to music, Malcolm Gladwell
talks about genius.

The Grotarian pianos are fucking genius. I am going to play that one for quite some time. Thanks for that. That influences stuff though can be pretty subjective sometimes. Some are dead on to me, but others are way more vague. Oh well, who cares, no?

but, i found that germany and texas both have a band i've never heard of in common: linkin park. who/what the hell is linkin park?!

Tom Waits is on the top ten in Cuba, further proof of Cuban musical superiority.

I agree it's pretty awesome; I really have played with that thing for hours.

Yeah, but it's fun to see the dots that people connect.

who/what the hell is linkin park

Linkin Park sound like every other "modern rock" band, with the addition of occasional rapping. So, even though you haven't ever heard them, you have essentially heard them.

Very possible. What surprises me is the worldwide popularity of Celine Dion. Really. Look around. Why, for example, is she so popular in African countries? Does she have a new album or something? It makes me think the whole thing is rigged.

those top 10 lists may very well be rigged, but I think CDs popularity is not. back when we were mentioning her a lot on this blog, we would constantly get hits from the most bizarre places from people connecting from searches of her name. I'd check the statcounter site and get all excited that someone from Siberia found our site and it turns out they were only looking for the Canadian Devil.

If Gladwell is correct, then I am a master at the skill of drinking beer. Yay.

RE: 6

I've been relating that philosophy to music for a long time though not in any conclusive way. Some bands that do everything as collectively as possible are really boring but then so are some bands that have a really strong leader.

I would relate it to nap positively.

RE: 5 dug it and as it relates to the last sentence I wrote - this is part of the reason I appreciate the collective element of this blog.
