The Balvenie Speaks
I make music and I'm always excited to hear new voices and new ideas. When I hear an extraordinary talent, my reaction is to embrace their work and then annoy the living fuck out of everyone by forcing them to hear it. It's wonderful to be humbled by someone's talent. So let me save you older musicians some time and let you know when it is time to "hang it up": it's the second you write about a younger more "undeserving" musician and bitch about the dues you've earned and the recognition you deserve. I don't care if you are freaking Highlander and you've been playing guitar since the middle ages; don't freaking write some bullshit e-mail about how you deserve the respect and recognition that is pouring on someone else. Hoping that recognition is somehow about the hours clocked-in is your last futile grasp for something you either lost or never had. Guess what? If you are the only person praising your talent, all you are doing is whacking-off in public. Have some dignity and take your shit home! Nobody wants to see it. Thank you and goodnight!

Some bullshit email? is this a response to someone in particular who wrote you an email?
If it is and if you are going to respond in public to a private email, then you need to let the public in on what the story is, otherwise it feels like you're telling secrets in public... and everyone knows that is not polite.
There are particular examples in the last week or two that surely inspired this but I'm not specifically replying to them. I think I'm just stunned that people are actually arrogant enough to use this line of reasoning. I'm not saying everyone has to love the same bands I do but when you fly that flag, it's going to get cut-down very quickly so don't fly it.
Oh and trust me those people have already had an earful.
But I totally deserve more attention than Joe Mathlete. Nobody even looked at my Kilian Sweeney Explains Today's Katzenjammer Kids site.
The kids today have it too easy.
I thought I was cagey enough but Ok cat's out of the bag. You pegged it Killian this blog was all about you and your jealousy of Joe Mathlete's Marmaduke blog.
It's kinda lame when you have to bitch to Ramon for not getting enough "exposure"(?). Worst of all, said email probably ruined a good dram of the Balvenie.
I like how everyone has built up some narrative when I'm speaking very much in the general sense here.
Carlos - would you please go into a tirade about how we are all getting sick and tired of these NAP generalizations? Thanks.
btw - nobody answered my q, is somebody doing a napcast this week? Geez. Pay attention people! God dammit Joe Mathlete!!!
I'm busy watching In Like Flint. Did you know that the male heart does 72 beats per minute and the female one 80?
Is that in a general sense Carlos? Because if so I don't give a Joe Mathlete.
And the manual dexterity of women is 20% higher...
specifically, not generally... Derek Flint has the facts.
Off topic: Will some one put together a Mellotron tribute NAPcast?
specifically: the number of people telling me who is doing this week's napcast is Zero.
I can't do the podcast this week.
I really think we need another cramer-dadcast. Everybody enjoyed that one so much. more! more!
oh, I can't do the cast either this week, unlessen I do it right now and then it'll be all the stuff I like which may or may not be worse than the dadcast. killian, you may want to take a swing at this.
I can't do the midwest rock one this week. The churchbus Winter Podcast is ready however.
It's snowing here, very holiday-ish. Happy Solstice everyone.
I can't do the cast either, but I will see some of you guys today!
your favorite sports team and/or rock band and/or tv show sucks.
Ramon sucks.
His band sucks.
NAP sucks.
Thanks for your time.
Yeah so what's the story on the next napcast Are we just taking a break this week or what?
I vote for letting the NAPcast take an Xmas break and starting it back up in the new year when travel etc. is all less stressy. Myself, I am travelling and all my easily accessible MP3s are back in New Zealand and I would have a difficult time contributing anyway.
Dying to hear how the Mike Gunn show went.
It went very well. I hope that wrap-up was satisfactory.
The show went pretty well. I'll do a wrap up on Saturday and I'm sure John and Justin will mention it too. Kind of nice to see NAP representin with Justin, John, Claire, and Ramona . : )
Sorry I didn't talk to everyone as much as i'd have liked.
But in short:
Sew What was ok by herself but her band was doing her no favors.
Thee Freed were pretty good and much more cohesive than their last show.
Hearts of Animals was as usual amazing.
The Mike Gunn was insane with a crowd that was as nutters as the crowd I saw at the sprawl reunion show. I think that's the most animated I'd seen john live ever. Kudos to the guy in the double naught t-shirt.
Our set was 45 minutes of painful momentum killing guitar tuning by your truly.
The Mirrors had the crowd up and dancing and soaked in Beer.
So a great night overall..
Ramona was there? Well damn, would've been nice to have met her. Not that I know her or anything, but you know, it's cool putting faces to people on this site. It was cool finally meeting Claire, and it'd been awhile since I'd seen John. And of course it was really awesome seeing the Mike Gunn play again. I was one of those people for whom that show was an insanely big deal.
And at least by now everyone and their mother must have a pretty clear idea that "Linus show = more tuning than you thought possible" so there should've been no surprises. But yeeikes there was indeed a pantload of tuning going on. I think maybe someday we should play the lottery or apply for a grant or something so everyone can get a pristinely in-tune guitar for every song so we don't have to worry about it anymore. For the love of god, something must be done.
Well the thing is my guitar usually stays in key - that's why I spent like $80 on those tuners ages ago. I was just playing way too hard and beating the shit out of my guitar and it just looked back and me and said "What the fuck is you problem?" I didn't know that we had the Malden ready for use until the penultimate song. Arguably I should have switched guitars after I broke a sting on the first song and proceeded to play a mostly 5 string set. So yeah, all blame for issues with the performance sits right here with me.
Whatevs. Mirrors, Mike Gunn, HOA made up for any of my shortcomings.
Oh I don't know... we ALL tune too much... Clinton tunes constantly too, and the only reason it seems I don't tune is because I do it silently with the Boss tuner... though I am happy to admit that my current guitar seems to go out of tune less than any other I've ever used...
Ramon, et all:
I was there, too. Sorry for not saying hi. I thought you guys were great. It was good to hear La Tapatia live. My wife really got a kick out of that one, especially when Ramon, I mean Satan, started screaming in her face. There was already an air of lost momentum as soon as The Mike Gunn unplugged their gear, and I'm sure that affected the overall atmosphere. Your set itself was solid LP4.
I'll tell you, between The Mike Gunn blowing everybody out of their respective minds, and LP4 going totally apeshit, the show lent a lot of credence to the point Anaconda was making a few posts back. I mentioned to John that night that that show was about the happiest I've ever seen him, and definitely the most animated live. I don't think there's much reality to it, but I hope that the success of the show might possibly lead to the occasional Mike Gunn show in the future. The crowd clearly would have enjoyed an all Mike Gunn night. If Travis over at He Said She Said is on the ball, he'll be hitting John and friends up for a full-set show sometime in the not too distant future.
It was wonderful to meet you too Charlie.
It was a great show.
I pretended I was young again getting out there, but it was nice to see people who obviously never stopped getting out there.
I don't get out much, so I had a few beers and yelled a bit. It was great fun. Too bad my cousin, and I, are early to bedders, so we didn't get to see much of LP4, but the first sounds and actions were enough to show me what I was missing walking out the door. It was all a lot of fun and I'm glad I went and met a few of you. Hope to do it again sometime.
Good ol Houston.
I can do the napcast this Sunday, if people want to have one.
That would be great Ramona! Awesome. It was great to see you.
