Those are last year's dates for Pitchfork.

It looks like I'm going to have a little bit of flex time in America and/or Europe to sneak away and see a festival late July/possibly into early August, but the pickings aren't promising for my musical tastes. It looks my festival going will be limited to WOMAD this weekend. I should really figure out accomodations.

For those interested in the Noisettes, I hear they will be playing in Austin Wednesday night. It's the one band I can remember of this century and by god I will promote them.

That is too good to be true!

I had a feeling something like this would happen to him, though. Some kind of fate/karma thing combined with the old stones & glass houses motif...

I hope it was worth the $5500 an hour he paid, plus the loss of his political career.

While he said he didn't live up to his standards, I'm not sure visiting a prostitute is technically hypocritical for the guy whose main concern was keeping corporations in check.

My question is: Why does Spitzer, of all people, need to pay for tail?

Bluebird, you are right on all three counts...they are not mutually exclusive.

This is precisely why progressive politics are such a hoot to me. You can take the ape out of the jungle, but you can't take the jungle out of the ape, even when the ape has a law degree and an Armani suit. Spitzer may have been a smart ape, but he's still an ape, and dominating and/or fucking other apes is obviously his top priority, by using whatever flavor of demagoguery happened to be popular at the time. If he had been in the South, his name would have been Tom DeLay or Jerry Falwell and he would have been taking on godless sodomites instead of corporations.

Right on, no one is perfect, so why bother trying to improve society? Let's all just give in and let Wall Street defraud us, for instance; I'm sure that will be great for the economy too.

You're right, Conor. Prostitution rings clearly signify Spitzer's attempts at bettering society, I fully support his actions too. Well done. Can I buy a bag of whatever you're smoking? I don't think I've ever been that high before. What a fantastic point.

My point, John, is that one man's failings, or the imperfection of humans in general, do not somehow make progressive politics, or causes espoused by progressive politicians such as fighting corporate malfeasance, any less valid, less important, or a waste of time. There is obviously a lesson to be learned here (for instance, the eternal dangers of hubris and of being overly self-righteous), but that is not it.

I guess everytime somebody does something civil we should point out how we differ from apes.

Like this morning I made a pot of coffee for myself and a french pressed pot of decaf for my wife even though that sacrificed four minutes of my time and I didn't get to bang her either.

Or like this second where I'm about to hit "Publish Your Comment" to join in this delightful civil discussion as to whether or not we are all jungle apes or hippies.

I think I might want to be a ho banging progressive power tripper rather than either of those.

Spitzer is a megalomaniac who routinely abused his power in office (whether he ordered state police to hassle a political rival, or whether he leaked memos to discredit people he was prosecuting in the public eye, etc., etc.). Progressives lined up alongside him because, to quote an Arab saying, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". They wet themselves with glee while Spitzer took out Wall Street fat cats, whether those fat cats were really guilty or not, and they didn't look too close at the tactics or methods of the AG's office. In other words, for liberals, Spitzer's ends justified his means. Well, now you got only the means, and he's your governor, and he just got busted for banging hos. Congratu-fucking-lations.

And Kilian, there are apes, and there are domesticated apes. The domesticated ones are the ones who make coffee for their wives and care about their fellow man, etc. The undomesticated ones are the ones who rise to high office and abuse the fuck out of it, while laughing at all the domesticated apes whose backs they climbed over to get there.

1.) a genuine hypocrite only interested in power

I don't think this is the case. There are certainly better ways of getting power than fighting against the people who already have it.

2.) an alpha-male prone to this kind of behavior

Very likely.

3.) did he have the human fatal flaw that the more righteous he became, the more he had to do himself in?

Does this actually happen?

And Spitzer prosecuted prostitution rings while DA

It's amazing that this is the thing people seize on. Sure he did, that was his job, like it's any prosecuter's job. Would you have any idea who he was if that's all he did? No. The things you know him for have nothing to do with prostitution.

Prostitution rings clearly signify Spitzer's attempts at bettering society

Nobody ever said this. And it's shortsighted to say that the prostitution ring stuff invalidates anything else he's done.

Justin, the point I'm trying to make is that the (allegedly) good things he did were often done using tactics and methods that were abuses of power. Progressives never cared as long as rich Wall Streeters were the victims of these abuses. If he had locked all these Wall Street cats up without due process and confiscated their property for his own use, would you still say, "Oh well at least he did some good by taking out the wall street bad guys".

The guy was arrogant and thought the rules were for everyone else but him. Do I give a shit if he banged a prostitute? No, if it were up to me prostitution would be legal. But it's not, and he broke the very laws he was sworn to uphold. That is a breach of public trust and an arrogation of power, and he absolutely deserves to be publicly humiliated and lose his career in the same fashion as his many victims.

Blogger bluebird of doom and gloom said...

Justin, he was a hypocrite to the extent that he did nothing to change the prostitution laws when he clearly didn't agree with them and had a split-consciousness that found it ok to perform certain sex acts with a prostitute rather rather than with his wife. I suppose everybody is dying to know what they did for four hours that may have been 'unsafe'. I'm wondering if the wife knew about it all along and secretly condoned it because she wouldn't whatever he wanted. He has three daughters. How does he feel about their future roles in society? Are his daughters more equal than other people's daughters?

3.) did he have the human fatal flaw that the more righteous he became, the more he had to do himself in?

Does this actually happen?

I would venture a guess that it made the sex much more exciting to have all of the illicit elaborate arrangements- which is a way of doing oneself in.

Now, if he had suggested earlier that prostitution be legalized with a minimum wage law of $1000/hr for women, that would have been a more interesting way to address the power imbalances in society.

Who knows what kind of a deal he had with his wife? I have always figured that top-dog alpha males must frequently have "understandings" with their wives (pro athletes, actors, pols, CEOs, etc.) They probably have a constant stream of women coming at them because of their wealth and status, and men are what they are, after all. The wife likes the male's alpha status and the perqs that come with it, and she accepts the philandering that she knows comes with that type of male. It's a sort of de-facto polygamy which has the advantage of preserving legitimate paternity, inheritance & legal rights, etc.... these types of arrangements are as old as the hills and more generally accepted in Europe, for example.

Regardless, I feel really bad for his daughters, and the look on his wife's face makes me doubt whether she knew about, or condoned, what he was doing.

That's probably a look she has practiced for a very long time... especially if she was part of the "Alpha arrangement". Does she get shoes out of that deal?

His daughters can now bleed whatever future they want out of him, and he won't have a choice about giving it to them unless he shoots himself in the face... Nothing important to say here.

Right, but making laws is the job of the legislature, not the AG. He could certainly have been outspoken about it, but not enforcing the law would mean not doing his job.

By the way, I'm not defending him or saying that he has keen judgement or anything, but I don't think he is a hypocrite in the way, say Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, or Larry Craig are. Those guys actively worked against the very moral failings that they secretly harbored.

Ok, Justin, I realize there may be a few contradictions if I try to advance the following argument, but I'll do it anyway: if certain people in our culture are willing to reduce sex to a commodity, at least it should be a really high-priced commodity, that way you can get rid of the exploitation argument. A few women who make the decision to become prostitutes do it because it pays better than a clerical job; more of them have been victims of childhood sexual abuse, are addicted to drugs, and/or have little economic power, and therefore are leveraged into selling their sexuality too cheaply (to people with more power in society). Because prostitution is illegal, prostitutes are hesitant to go to the police when subjected to violence and end up losing a lot of their earnings by paying for protection elsewhere. Of course, there'd probably still be a black market to deal with if it were legal and regulated...

I agree, Justin, and I never actually said that. I'm pretty much with SoH on this one. A good deed is a good deed, whether or not he ever comitted one was never the point of SoH's opinion to me. I read him as saying that he finds humor in the progressive urge to bolster Spitzer in light of his epic undoing, which is cheap. In other words, any self respecting progressive should recognize that Spitzer's actions with call girls are separate from his past work. Hell, I've done much worse in my life than give a woman money for sex. If that was my lowpoint I'd be pretty happy with myself. No one should feel they need to efend him baed on his previous professional record. He fucked prostitutes. Wonderful. I would never dream of claiming that it has any reflection on his AG doings.

On a certain level, I would argue that prostitution should be a low-priced commodity in order to discourage a black market in said market. I have similar feelings about drug trafficking. Also yr argument is very hetero-normative and male hiring female normative. Has no one seen MIDNIGHT COWBOY?

NZ has legal prostitution, though I have no inside information on wages or practical knowledge to apply to get more details.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY sorta proves the point about exploitation. then again, said piece of empirical evidence is actually a movie, and probably not how most people enter the profession. wasn't actually trying to frame the proposal in terms of gender, so please feel free to substitute the word person in for woman (or child, for that matter) wherever appropriate.

I hope that upon hearing how much Spitzer paid, prostitutes across the world have raised their rates accordingly. Speaking of raising one's rates... how much am I getting paid for doing these damned drawings just about now?!

a little late to the prostitute party, but just read this little bit and thought it funny. Also, MLK Jr., I was told by a woman in his campaign, used to hire prostitutes all the time while, literally, preaching. What are you going to do? What is bad? Or "bad"?

Spitzer Prostitute Smells Opportunity; Music Career Revived

In the wake of a prostitution scandal involving New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a struggling music career is bubbling to life. The prostitute that recently serviced "Client 9," as Spitzer was referred to, suddenly received a very bright media spotlight. And the high-priced hooker, identified as Ashley Alexander Dupre, was actually a struggling musician before accepting more lucrative gigs.

After the identity was revealed, Dupre's MySpace page started receiving millions of visits. That translated into heavy listens of the track, "What We Want," a surprisingly radio-friendly pop track. That was the beginning of a classic viral spread, one that quickly involved YouTube and the broader internet.

"What We Want" and another track, "Move Ya Body," also found their way onto AmieStreet, a variably-priced, demand-driven store. Both tracks quickly escalated to 98 cents, the maximum price allowed for a song, according to information revealed by the company.
