NAPcast 61 Thin Lizzy

Photobucket

As I mention in the intro, I really wanted to have more time to put together a Thin Lizzy cast that I could really get behind. I am still behind this one, I just wish I could have brought you more.

Any volunteers for future host gigs? I'm always listening.

I'm a good listener.

Here's some useless information for you though:

Andy Garcia was a conjoined twin.
Debra Winger was the voice of E.T.
During Melville's lifetime, MOBY DICK only sold 50 copies.
Some toothpaste contains anti-freeze.
The eyes of some birds weigh more than their brains.
Armadillos have four babies at a time and they are always the same sex, and they can walk underwater.
There are about 5,000 different languages spoken on Earth.
Boris Karloff is the narrator for the Grinch who stole xmas cartoon.
Sheryl Crow's two front teeth are fake. She busted them out tripping because she rocked so hard at one of her concerts.
Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady" was about Vince Neil.
and finally,
Van Gogh who began painting at 27, cut off his LEFT ear. His self portrait with bandaged ear shows his right ear covered up, because he used a mirror to paint himself.

Sorry about the playlist typos.
And the Rest of the Day to yourself.

I know this is going to sound contrarian just to be contrarian but really I'm one of those few people that generally don't get Thin Lizzy. I mean "Gonna Creep Up on You" is pretty good and "Whiskey in the Jar" is a brilliant interpretation but beyond that there is something about Thin Lizzy that always happens to me when someone throws me a mix tape of their work - i get bored. (Yes, that even includes "Jailbreak".) Like in this podcast, it just became background music around maybe like "Showdown".

Everyone I know freaking loves Thin Lizzy and I, for the life of me, am pretty oblivious to their charms. I don't know what it is but it just never grabs me and says "Fuck Yeah!"

OK Thin Lizzy fans - flame on!

Ramon, we know what direction your musical taste pulls you in, and, on top of that, you like the Bangles. Enough said.

This podcast is beautiful and I am loving it. To me, Lynott wrote some of the most emotionally resonant rock of the 70s and 80s. No lie.

Ramon, you should do Ramon-cast. You can fill it wish trash like HoA, Deer Tick, and Kate Bush. When is your lobotomy?

That Deer Tick song is so bad I am beginning to think you might be losing your hearing. Seriously, what is going on with you right now? Have you lost your mind?

I know you actually listen to music with your ears, why have you forsaken them, or us for that matter?

I love Linus, but your best song wouldn't be hired to wipe Thin Lizzy's ass based solely on the very first song on the cast, Emerald. You got some 'splaining to do.

If this is boring, then what excites you about the music you hold dear?

John,

I'm not dismissing Thin Lizzy out of hand, I mean I do give two song some props even if one is a cover. I'm just saying I don't get them.

That's fine, I mean Luis Black used to hassle me about how great Big Star was and I never got them until recently. And my appreciation of Jandek was pretty academic until I just saw him live at SXSW. It wasn't until then that I really got an emotional connection to what Jandek was doing.

I dunno, you hate Deer Tick but that's something I can hook onto on an emotional gut level - which I think is what music ultimately is about - while This Lizzy I just don't feel. I can listen to the Deer Tick or Paul Westerberg and play it endlessly and still find something interestign there. I think that maybe it's just that I came into Thin Lizzy too late and whatever they have that makes them special has been reduced to common rock tropes.

And you are right I do like a lot of terrible stuff, I mean I do have a soft spot for some Bangles stuff like All Over the Place before they get really awful and yeah I also havea soft spot for crap like The Exploited when Big John was on guitar which admittedly is pretty crappy punk rock. You know I listen to freaking Gong! Gong!

Maybe you should post something explaining to me the nuances of Thin Lizzy.

Oh and just as a point of fact, in the LP4 at least Clinton and Charlie get Thin Lizzy. They love all that "meat and potatoes" rock as Clinton calls it. For me there is always something plodding about all that stuff. If my ears want to rock they just prefer to hear say a low-fi garage band rock out than a 70's arena rock band do the same.

I don't really think the beauty lies in the nuance, but I may just explain why I love them when I try and post this afternoon after work. Thanks for a topic. I'll think about it.

And I too like what you think is terrible music, so, I get the subjectivity of it all. And I'm an ass to boot, so there's that.

Hey John I was just thinking. Take the Monks or the MC5. Now that is hit you in the gut on the edge of your seat rock and roll. THAT is excitement on wax. That is what is missing for me with all these arena rock bands. I don't feel they are really taking any chances. Find me that Dry Nod moment in Thin Lizzy where they are about to carreen over the edge but just barely keep it together and maybe I'll get it.

That is what band like this are missing. And while they may not ROCK bands like HOA, Deer Tick, or if you want to go with the classic rock examples John Lennon, Big Star, and Neil Young do that on a personal level.

And even some arena bands like Pink Floyd or King Chrimson have that excitement on wax where you can tell that the bands at their height don't really know where they are headed.

That is entirely my problem with Thin Lizzy in a nutshell.

No no no no no.

Can't get into this Black Irish garbage, I don't care if he covered Whiskey in the Jar, that probably inspired Metallica to do the same, so reason enough to hate them for it.

I've said it here before but I can't forgive Thin Lizzy for leaving Romeo / out on his own-eo. Also Jman and my brother were always forcing Thin Lizzy on us captured bandmates during road trips. Bad memories.

I don't get it either - I'd rather rock out to the Stooges or any number of hard hitting bands that this polished stuff.

Actually, I need to listen to this podcast, because I've only heard a half-a-handful of Thin Lizzy songs and I hated them. I reserve a specially hate-filled place in my hear for "The Boys Are Back in Town" but I understand that might just be an anomaly, so I'll check out this podcast to see if their other stuff is better.

When did musical ineptness become an art form? What is the love affair with bands that can't play their instruments?

Bands like the MC5 and the Stooges are great, because they *transcended* their musical ineptitude with pure power, soul and brilliant songwriting. But constantly tripping over your own musical dick most emphatically does *not* make you cool, especially if you have no other redeeming qualities.

I know Thin Lizzy mostly through their AOR radio play, which is a bad thing (see Charlie's response, for example - he was poisoned by hearing The Boys are back in town every hour on the hour, when Freebird wasn't being played). I am looking forward to checking out the deep cuts.

Dude of course you have to have more than just tripping over your dick but tripping over your dick be it the Replacements to the MC5 is that thing that made those bands exciting and engaging.

And the tripping over your dick isn't as important as leaving the opportunity to trip over it. Rock or any music should have some element of excitement and danger which genrally I associate with the possibility of making a complete ass of yourself and utterly fucking it up. A band like Dry Nod did that every night and at times it was the most embarrassing god awful crap to crawl out of the slime but at other times it was transcendent. That is what I'm talkign about putting yourslef out there and possibly even playing beyond your abilities.

Thin Lizzy and its like are just well manufactured bar rock and there is nothing wrong with that but there is nothing engaging about to me that either which is why it inevitably becomes background muzak.

Oh and sorry I figured You and Charlie were into thin lizzy

and yes boys are back in town is freakign awful charlie thanks for reminding me.

Well, I never figured out what the big deal was with the Replacements, they mostly sounded like a drunk cover band to me. The MC5 certainly took chances, but if that was all they did they would have been unlistenable. They had a great frontman, great stage presence, lots of soul and power and a bunch of really good songs. You can take chances if you have all that; otherwise you're just a bunch of drunks.

You're all bastards.

Admittedly, I didn't want to throw this cast out there because I wanted to go through their entire discography and pick specific pieces, but didn't have time to download it all. I also hate "The boys are back in town" because it was shoved down my throat on the radio. Like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.... and Peter Gabriel for fucks sake.

Years later, sitting down and listening to this Thin Lizzy, alot of the appeal to me is how they have been dismissed, when they were more than capable of writing good songs. Personally, its the vocals more than the guitars that appeal to me. But as a band they really do bring it, and I wonder what the Anti-Lizz trip is all about. There's just so much emotion there and the voice is so unique and so is the sound. I have to agree that Showdown isn't a favorite of mine, but like I said... I had no time to throw this together. Emerald and Massacre are my favorites today, and when I get through the rest of it.. I WILL return and do this again. There's something that draws me to the creepy music (creepy as in it grabs me) that was made the year that I was born and closely around it. I imagine it as a time when my mother was hitting the discos and looking beautiful.. while the Zodiac and AIDS were right around the block... So I guess some of the appeal is in the set up... but Thin Lizzy were a great band and that doesn't hurt in painting the picture for me when I listen to them either.

I like the one artist podcast idea... Any takers for next week? If you haven't done a cast for us yet, it's easy and I can help. If no one volunteers... I'll torture you again next week... with something you're SURE TO LOVE.

I'm not really Anti-Thin Lizzy as I just don't think about them at all until someone say "Man, You gotta listen to thin Lizzy!" they toss me a mix tape and I shrug - the voice, the guitars, the songwriting none of it even remotely grabs me in any way.

But there are a lot of people who really dig it so yeah cool if you like it. Just not my thing I guess.

The guitar work these guys do is, for me, what sets them apart. I am a sucker for harmonized lead/phrasing though, and TL almost invented it.

I am at the point now where if I hear a rock band and they don't have guitar solos, they can pretty much suck it. That's one reason why I hate so many new bands and all the bullshit college/indie crap that is out there now. WHERE ARE THE FUCKING SOLOS? Do they think they are too cool to play guitar solos? Do they smugly laugh at hair bands and pretend they didn't spend hours learning how to hammer-on when they were 14? Fuck them for the posers they are. If you are going to waste my time and money and stand up in front of me on a stage with a guitar, you BETTER play a fucking solo or at least try.

Oddly enough, I feel the same way about Disney's "The Black Hole". If you don't like that movie, you are dead to me, and may flaming demons assfuck you for eternity, much like I imagine they did to Reinhardt and his big red robot lackey Maxmilian.

Okay, after Charlie's comment I had to go back and look at past Thin Lizzy posts and comments because this is starting to get very deja vu. Actually the site has been a bit deja vu for about a month.

I found nothing re: The Black Hole, but somebody brought it up at work just yesterday which is weird. I never saw it but I read the Disney paperback when I was a kid and liked that. I hope that's enough to keep the butt demons at bay.

As far as my Thin Lizzy comments go, I am definitely getting more polarized.

From: meh, whatever have fun --2006 when TL first reared it's

To: Dear God, Please no! -- right the F now ;-)

Still though, I like the art work and the cast idea. And I did listen to it this morning.

I'm having a hard time with how the classic rock bands seem to elicit the most polarized discussions on this blog. AC/DC, Steely Dan, Thin Lizzy.... why are we so passionate about this 30 year old music, most of which has little relevance outside of our own stereos/heads anymore?

I mean, come on claire, dead to you if we don't like TL? How much do we have to like it? I like some of their stuff quite a bit, but some other songs are somewhat mediocre. His voice is great, but his guitar players never did much for me. But I don't want to be dead to you, so I'll try to like them better in the future.

God damn, you people are retarded. Who gives a fuck when it came out? Does music have a shelf life? And K, slagging the man because he's black? Hello?

I unequivocably love TL, and that includes Boys Are Back. Letting the radio dictate what I listen to is idiotic. I realized that 20 years ago. It's why I still love Zep.

I couldn't personally care any less if you guys don't care for TL. I wish you loved it like I do because I get all goofy when I listen to them and I wish others would too, but we all feel that way about something or other so that's good enough for me. As much as you people piss me off at least we're all music lovers in some sense. Considering the morass of fuckheads I deal with every day I'll live with it. Anyone want my post this week, I am over it right now.

John, i didnt' mean to say that the music wasn't worth liking because it was old. What i meant to say is that i didnt see why people get all up in arms when someone likes or dislikes one of these older bands. I guess is just friends being friends and giving each other shit about their music taste and i need to keep my trap shut about it. I'll try to follow my own advice next time.
