Claire, the cars bit was just some silly fun i was having recording the engines to all these different cars. maybe they'll show up in something later. some of the original recordings have human voices saying things, like, should i start it now? and stuff like that. I've really enjoying the whole music concrete stuff recently (thanks macbook!) and this is just another experiment along those lines. In the version above, towards the end are some windchimes and some coquis that were in the background of some of the car recordings, i think those are what you are hearing as seals... also, cars and oceans do have some strange similarities... as for what a mechanic might hear, i'm thinking my grandfather would've been hearing that the Jeep needs a new alternator, or, that the Toyota doesn't get driven enough. maybe.

Ramon, thank you for the monitoring assist. As for teh pirate story, one day maybe I'll write the whole story; the above is just the tip of the iceberg of the whole thing which indeed is pretty awesome. the only problem with that is that there have already been several novels and history books written about him, on top of the genealogical study Dra. Acosta did. So I would have to find a certain angle.

Emar, there are more pictures of him with cars at my grandmothers house, but the one above is the only i have at home. The time when he was doing this would've been right at the time when Model T's became readily available, sometime around the WWI years. and yes those engines were super simple by todays standards, probably closer to a motorcycle or a classic VW bug than to any car made today.

Do you have any pictures of the cars your grandfather raced? I bet they were very simple by today's standards which allowed more personal interaction with the machines. What a fascinating time it must have been. Communication through a muffler, that is smart!! You might give my son some bad ideas.

Emar

Somebody went and researched the pirate's ansestry back to 1500s in Bohemia. The pirate was born in Puerto Rico, but his father was born in Bohemia. His father, Francesco Kaufferstein, came from a famliy that had members in the Royal Bohemian Army (sounds like some sort of band name). I don't remember right now it Francesco was also in the RBA, but what he did do was get involved in a duel and kill the man who later turned out to be a tax collector (very high rank). So he had to leave the country or he would've been hanged. He went to Trieste for some time then Spain then Puerto Rico by which time Kaufferstein had been spanisized into Cofresi. He married and one of his children was the pirate, who some now believe had corsair papers from the recently independent Venezuela in order to aid in the fight against the Spanish. Which would make him not really a pirate.
