Green Diamonds and Rusty Crowns

Until the night that my dad flew Project Grimm all the way to Detroit just to play one show for his 60th birthday party (which actually wasn't for 2 more years, because he wasn't sure if he would live that long (he did and continues living quite well at that)), I always had little patience for the notorious Fleetwood Mac era. At the night in question, and after my bandmates tied one on with my ever game father, the dj busted out his copy of Fleetwood Mac's greatest hits on the lot of us. It was one of those nights where dumb shit happened, dumb shit like me suddenly really digging Fleetwood Mac, really getting Stevie Nicks. Even digging Christine McVie for god's sake. It was that kind of satanically creepy Detroit night

When I was a kid, Fleetwood Mac occupied a place in my musical universe mostly saved for what I believed to be people much older than me, due in no small part to my being totally uninterested in the coke-fueled failed-romance subject matter.

But then my friend down the street, Joe, turned me on to a band who I still listen to today. Judas Priest.

The first Priest album I bought was Unleashed in the East, which is their ultimate live statement on record if you ask me. One of the centerpoints of the Priest set during that era (and since) was the song The Green Manalishi With the Two Pronged Crown. I knew nothing more about that song than any other Priest song other than the fact that it blew me away (still does).

Imagine my surprise when I discovered who actually wrote the song.

You guessed it, Fleetwood Mac.

Better still, the song was written by the founder of Fleetwood Mac, a guy who basically became debilitated by mental illness and parted ways with the band. Peter Green. Of course they eventually went on to acquire a couple of snotty but 70s sort of attractive Americans and went on to a level of noteriety that is hard to imagine by mere mortals such as ourselves.

I always wondered what the Mac version sounded like since, first off, I love that song, and second, considering the Peter Green stuff I have heard from them beyond Manalishi, I figured that track would be strong as well.

It is.

And it's no surprise why Judas Priest covered it either.

Watch both bands versions and see why the song is so fucking brilliant.

And then, I'll tell you about Joan Baez.

See what I mean?

Also on the album is a song titled Diamonds and Rust. Care to know who originally penned and performed that epic metal monster?

That's right! Joan Baez! Written for the godfather of metal, Bob Dylan!

I fucking love Rob Halford.

Check this out:

I remember your eyes were bluer than robin's eggs.

Metal.

That's it for me this week.

On a totally unrelated note.

Come home soon, baby. I miss you and am totally uselsss without you.

And that too is metal.

Carry on.

Well, since you're choosing yourself as the judge, then I guess so.

I think the Fleetwood Mac version surpasses the Priest version, but then I'm a big fan of both incarnations of Fleetwood Mac. Except that eighties crap--I can't stand that. Buckingham and Green couldn't be more different, but they are both awesome.

The second comparison is hilarious. It seems pretty tongue-in-cheek (though it wouldn't surprise me if Halford is a fan of Baez) and it makes you wonder how tongue-in-cheek all of Priest's stuff is. It's like a heavy metal drag show, but they could never let on about it because their audience would never understand.

I agree with you on the Mac version of Manalishi.

And again, thank god for Rob Halford.

What's wrong with the Fleetwood Mac of the 80's? That is when they had their greatest success and their best sound.

Oh forget it, my response brings to mind an earlier post about defending one's taste in music and I guess I was asking Justin to qualify his opinion on Fleetwood Mac. That was wrong. I'm sorry.

Green Diamonds and Rusty Crowns?

So many ways to go with this post John, the only trouble is you're in on the joke. I guess I'll just leave it alone.

My junior high friend's older brother - our introducer to the world of rock and unruly behavior - had the early Judas Priest stuff and since I had the Joan Baez stuff from my parent's old collection I was in on Judas Priest's inner-faggot pretty early on. But I had no true gay-dar. Queen's inner-queen escaped me for several more years.

It's actually not true that they their greatest success in the eighties. Their biggest selling album by far (assuming sales is how you define success) was Rumours in 1977. Not only was it their best selling album, it's one of the best selling albums ever. Best sound? Obviously that's subjective, but "Big Love?" "Hold Me?" Blah.

Actually John, I believe you were being a little presumptious in assuming I was making myself judge. I simply meant that you finally mentioned a band that is popular through out and not just Houston. I was growing tired of reading about the same three or four bands that are constantly mentioned here. Yes, I know, I don't have to read this NAP site, but please if there is little to no music scene in Houston then why not write about bands that are actually happening elsewhere?

Frankie,

Why don't you write about some music from elsewhere, and we'll post it Saturday.

Were you only reading Ramon's posts? I try very hard NOT to write posts about the same band more than once, and granted not all my posts are about bands, but I certainly don't write about any local houston bands.

I have the feeling "Frankie" is taking the piss (as Julie would say), since John never writes about Houston bands except the ones he has been in (and then rarely still). And in fact, nobody on this site writes much about Houston bands, especially now that Ramon put his napsack on a twig.

If not, he's feeding one of my pet peeves which is to associate all of us with the writings of one of us.

Wednesday and Carlos ,perhaps I was jumping the gun there. Sorry.

Justin, you're right about Fleetwood Mac. But I do prefer the 80's sound

Sorry for talking out of my ass. I am at work and work is sucking and when work sucks I see the world in a very unrealistic negative light.

But I'm off Saturday and so the world won't suck. Thanks for the offer anyway. The NAP and it's readers is a lot safer without my input.

Don't sweat it Frankie I know the mood.

What I don't understand is how you think Judas Priest and Joan Baez is "happening." ;)

I'm just glad that after a year and a half John has moved on from heavy metal. Oh...wait...

I have a co-worker who saw Judas Priest during their Screaming For Vengeance tour and said it was the greatest show he'd ever been to. He explained to me all the particulars of the stage configuration, the setlist, Halford's Harley and, of course, the cornicopia of leather.

He then said he was real bummed when Halford turned fag.

What's that, W? More metal you say? Well, if you insist. And by all means, go with the post, go with the post. Wake up this morgue scene for the love of god! And don't feel bad, I had no clue about Halford for years, though I knew about Mercury fairly early on. Not only that, I didn't get in with Paul Reubens until about a year ago! How's that for ignorant?

Hey Roscoe, or uh, Frankie, I almost never write about Houston bands, and on top of that, though I hardly care, there are shitloads of them to boot.

And Mr. Norris, Halford turned fag? Must have been a short turn.
