Dang, missed this 'til today -- thanks for the mention, Mr. M.

The Dann Penn version's cool, but personally, not much beats the Afghan Whigs' "Dark End of the Street" for me -- if you haven't already heard it, Greg Dulli does the tortured thing well.

As for Scarlett Johansson, I've heard her version of "Summertime," and it's eh. About like her acting, actually...

an entire waits songbook and she’s picking “fannin street”? i had heard of the project, but it just keeps getting weirder.

i think i will spend the rest of the morning listening to covers of “dark end of the street.” starting with the flying burrito brothers (they come up first when i do the youtube search).

Surely the Scarlett Johansson version of "Fannin Street" will be good, right? I mean, it features David Bowie and everything. Chanteuse wannabe with questionable singing abilities with over-the-hill rock star who hasn't released a decent album in more than two decades both desperately trying to look cool by covering Tom Waits--what could possibly go wrong?
