yuri's night dc
one of my favorite local dc bands, the cassettes, played at nasa gsfc for one of the 198 yuri's night parties that occured in 70 countries on every continent (including antarctica and the space station) yesterday.
it's hard to say really what the best thing about this band is. whatever your opinions are regarding the use of the theremin in modern rock music, it's impossible not to love arty (arthur harrison), who is the Real Deal. a theremin player's thereminist. he makes and sells his own instruments.

it says a lot that he's "celebrating 12 years on the internet," and hasn't had to change a thing about his website. just look at it! this guy is old school. i love it.

but it's not just the theremin. saadat is (arguably) the best drummer in town, and a mighty fine architect, as well. stephen (synth, hand-made button box, harmonica, mouth harp, kazoo, etc.) adds almost more color than one band could be expected to handle, except that shelby is the perfect match with his unstoppable energy.

they have recently teamed with my ex-upstairs-neighbor, nick, who now does stunning choreographed projections to their shows. and it doesn't even stop there. their manager-slash-mercantile-salesman is fully dressed with tophat, coattails at his open traveling suitcase of wares.
their shows are always worth seeing, but last night's was stepped up. shelby said he was particularly excited about this show because his dad used to work for nasa booting mainframes.
i thought since they have the tongue-in-cheek "world renowned & esteemed" in their current logo, i might make that statement a little truer.

ps
i'm honored to now be a regular poster on nap. thank-you! does that mean i need to send songs in for the podcasts? i might need instructions.

Welcome CB... I look forward to your posts about space and also to reading about stuff that i consider pretty close to home. the cassettes have been in what i would call the periphery of my local music scene for some time, though i've never seen them yet. I do think maybe I saw Arty at a theremin contest here a few year ago, but maybe it was someone who looked like him which would not be surprising in a theremin contest.
I contacted the chapel hill yuri's night person and got an email back saying he had dropped the ball and yuri's night would be celebrated at a local electronic music fest (admission $10-15), he said there might be a space suit there. Needless to say, i was highly disappointed. So next year, a friend of mine and I might work on making sure there is better preparation for this. I mean, come on, first man in space deserves a little more than being a sidekick to an electronic music festival.
so true, mr. anaconda. or you could plan ahead and travel to san fransisco to attend what is usually the mothership of the yuri's night world parties at NASA Ames. There was a pretty sweet article on it and interview with NASA Ames center director, pete warden, here:
