Born in the USA

Here is Springsteen doing a cover of Suicide’s Dream Baby Dream.

Watching this makes me wonder how may steps he was away from playing at CBGB back when he was writing songs for Patti Smith and being managed by MC5′s former manager. Surely Little Steven would have been up for it.

Just have to say I love those early Phil Ceccola Bruce pics.

There is also an amusing reprint of a Landau essay on Bruce here (LINK) that includes some nice MP3s of a 1975 performance.

Oh also Rosa listens to Little Stevens’ Underground Garage religiously

FYI, the CBGB & OMFUG space was purchased outright by John Varvatos and now houses an upscale men’s clothing boutique. The very clever thing they did in the store design was to leave the walls with all of the graffiti and flyers in tact. Now, one may have problems with the fact that the image of a historically significant space of political and cultural protest has been co-opted/ appropriated for the capitalist exercise of selling high-priced men’s fashion. But, thankfully, it wasn’t gutted. I’ve worked with a few too many high-end fashion clients on Madison Avenue, most of whom are all to easily impressed with clean white boxes. In protest to their retailing practices, I will probably buy all of my Christmas gifts for the men in my life at that store next December. How’s that for supporting the machinations of capitalism?
