the moog guitar

Like all right-thinking people, I was saddened by the premature death of Robert Moog. For so many of us, I brazenly like to think, Moog is synonymous with not just a sound but a sensibility, a sensibility best described as being at the point in a Venn diagram where the circles of Music, Science, Fun, and Absurdity coincide. There are lots of synths in the world, but somehow none captured the imagination when I was getting into music the way the Moog did.

Today I saw a link in a forum for the Moog Guitar. I thought that perhaps they were referring to one of the objects I would own were money no object and I had a permanent abode, the Moog Liberation. But no, in fact it is something else.

The Moog Guitar is currently only available in a signature edition for what seems an outrageous price. Even after watching the video, I don't really have my head around it, but then again, my own personal guitar playing tends towards (early) Mountain Goats instead of the Robert Fripp-style sounds this thing seems to be capable of. Is it something more special than what you could do with a pedal or three attached? Well, Lou Reed seems to think so. And you don't question motherfucking Lou Reed, now do you?

Anyway, I won't be buying a Moog guitar, although I am ever so slightly tempted by this t-shirt. But truth be told, I couldn't play that keyboard to save my fucking life.

dd - i tried to find the guitar on the link you included, but i couldn't find it. i was curious about the "ridiculous price." if i were a guitar player, i suspect i'd really want one of these. or maybe i could become a guitar player with one of these...

I'm a guitar player and I don't want it. If I want sustain like that I'll just use an Ebow. It's not quite the same, but it's not $6500. Not by a longshot.
