Chain of Fool

Rosa's post last week led me to watch a bunch of Nick Lowe videos that I hadn't seen in years. One of which was "Cruel to be Kind" which features Nick and his then wife Carlene Carter (daughter of June).

Over there in the margin was this interview.

It's not especially interesting, but it is pretty amusing how many simultaneous accents Carter has going on there.

Then I noticed this video of an interview with Lowe and Elvis Costello.

It's also not especially interesting, but then it got me thinking about who else had produced Elvis Costello. The first guy that came to mind is T. Bone Burnett, who produced my favorite Costello album, Spike

It turns out that Burnett also produced the recent Robert Plant/Allison Krauss album. I kept meaning to listen to something from that album because it sounded vaguely interesting. I mean, wanting to tour with Krauss was the excuse Plant gave about why he wouldn't tour with Zeppelin, so it must be good, right?

I looked up a few videos and this one at least looked interesting. And, in fact, it is pretty interesting.

After watching that, I went and bought the album, which despite its liberal use of Autotune in parts, is a delightful album.

So thanks for the recommendation, Rosa. Sort of.

Wow, that Plant/Krause video is so bad that as I was watching it I felt as though I rode down a water slide covered in razor blades landing directly into a pool of rubbing alcohol. Thanks a million. It's so painful to me whenever Plant tries to do his coy veteran routine. The forced sexual tension between them was about as believeable as watching Spaceballs passed off as a NASA training video.

john, spaceballs *is* a NASA training video. and what's up with all the camera "work" in the lowe/costello video? she's asking lowe questions and the camera girl - i'm imagining it's a girl with a huge crush on costello - is zooming in on costello and his coffee. sigh.

Damn, you want to reach into youtube and shake Carlene Carter after a while. She's totally lost.

But I empathize - I went from Queens to Bahrain (where I was mostly surrounded by Brits) to Texas by fifth grade; and by then my speech was a good source of peer abuse. Now I kind of go back and forth between a Long Island fast-talk, a drawl and nasally Chicago southsider speak.

Also I suffer from the dreaded slip into singing like a Brit. Nick Lowe suffers the reverse.
