name that gear, vol. 1

When I was 7, my grandmother bought me a subscription to games magazine. Most of the puzzles were too hard for me, but I always liked the game where you had to figure out what was in the photos from close-up images. So here we go…

HOW TO PLAY

1. Name the gear (instrument/type, manufacturer, model) shown in the photo
2. Mail your answers to copernicus07-namethatgear at yahoo dot com by 11:59pm Eastern, Saturday, August 2.

SCORING

4 points possible per photo (100 points total possible).

* 1 pt for the instrument or general category of piece of gear (e.g. compressor, violin, computer)
* 1 pt for the brand or manufacturer (e.g. Peavy, Stradivarius, Macintosh)
* 2 pts for the name of the specific item (e.g. Peavy VC/L-2, 1846 Stradivarius, Macintosh G5)

If you’ve spent more than 2 hours in my studio and your name begins with J, you will be given an automatic 25-point handicap, but you are still qualified to play. If you have spent more than 2 hours in my studio and your name begins with another letter, you will receive a handicap at my discretion.

Winner gets praise and glory and maybe a prize.

Answers and winners will be announced next weekend. Hints may appear in comments if I decide certain photos are too difficult or obscure. Multiple entries will be accepted.

item 17 could be a tascam mixer?

  • cherry blossom

if that is your entry, heidi, i will dutifully record it and post your score next sunday. :)

  • Carlos Anaconda

I’ve sent in my answers. fun game.

  • Wednesday

I think I spent twenty minutes in the studio so I guess I qualify except that I’m not the gearhead you’re looking for. I think I could rack up a lot of 1 pointers but I don’t have any luck in emailing you – at least I’ve never received a response so I’ll pass.

  • cherry blossom

wednesday, really? i suspect that might be because i never check my gmail. i’m sorry! :( i’m not intentionally not responding! plus, i set up a special address just for this game.

  • Wednesday

That’s okay – Wednesday is unlovable (sniff). Carry on. I don’t want to spoil the fun for everybody else.

    I’ll be in the corner.

  • cherry blossom

awww, c’mon, lovable cuddlable hugable wednesday. please play!

  • Carlos Anaconda

Wed, you can’t possibly be any less of a gearhead than me. I challenge you to a ‘less-of-a-gearhead’ er… challenge. right after the ‘less-vocabulary’ challenge.

  • cherry blossom

yeah, maybe i’ll give an anti-gearhead prize for the musician with the worst score. good idea, anaconda.

  • Wednesday

alright alright I’m mailing my answers now but you better write me back!

  • cherry blossom

wednesday has a commanding lead, but justin is a close second. with just a little bit of help from google, it could be anyone’s game.

  • Chris

I’m in. Answers emailed last night.

  • cherry blossom

wow, chris. you have tied justin’s non-handicapped score, putting you in the lead now. very impressive. some of these things were gimmes. but you got a couple that no one else has gotten yet. it’s fun to see which people know the real instruments and which people know the electronic gear….

You went to Paramount studios and visited the Star Trek sets.

  • Chris

In all honesty, I recognized what many of the things are but had to google them to get the correct name…all except the______ and the _______. Those I have.

  • baleen

Ah, but which synth is more fun to program – the DX7 or the modular?

  • cherry blossom

the modular, of course. but the best is programming them _together_.
