Here goes nothing...

Cramer left a void. I am attempting to fill it.

Let me just say this first post will most likely be aimless as I feel my way through whatever purpose there is in posting weekly to a music blog.

I do listen to music, so have some say in what I choose to listen to, but I stopped being a musician long ago, though I was never in a band, or band. I do admire musicians because I would imagine that first moment when you get a song going and everybody comes together has just got to be so cool.

I asked my 5 year old the other day if he wanted to learn an instrument. He got really excited and said he did and he wanted it to be the cymbals. Do you learn the cymbals? Are there teachers for this? Another thing to look up.

Speaking of looking things up, that is actually my job and something I do everyday for about 8 hours. So you might hear something about that from time to time.

Today I ran across the concept of a 'jaba.' In Cuba in the 70s there was a paper shortage and somehow everybody got used to using cheap, thin, plastic bags to carry everything in, instead of paper bags. It is now an indispensable part of Cuban life and everyone carries at least one. Say a street vendor suddenly starts selling bananas at a bargain price - you're out of luck if you don't have a jaba. At restaurants, they don't give you a bag, because you already have one with which to take your leftovers home. People wash them and reuse them for months. The only place to get a jaba is usually sold by a retiree for a few pennies on the street somewhere. You can't get them in a store. "Do you have a jaba?" is perhaps Cuba's most common expression, followed only by, "Where did you get that jaba?"

Awesome.

Additionally, I have recently begun using the term 'awesome', something I'm not particularly proud of as I have for so long gone without saying it. But now, like my new visits to Taco Bell, I am sucked in and using and liking it.

Let's see, the last thing will be that vinyl sales have gone up 36.6% in 2007 in year over year sales growth (and that just means since 2006 but I find that kind of language funny). Nostalgia is quite the trend, as it has always been. But people like the sound as well. I, on the other hand, either have two shitty record players or I hate the sound. I want to love the record, but just cannot get that shit together to easily produce a sound I like.

Here I will end.

Stacey - Welcome and thank you for filling Cramer's void.

It IS so cool.

Mary Ellen Donald plays the cymbals.

I thought you baked cookies.

And I didn't know about jabas but I am a sucker for the Taco Bell beef and potato taco and I have two turn tables and a very wet microphone.

Just in case anyone cares 'jaba' is pronounced 'haba' as in Havana, the way americans pronounce it, though actually Havana has a silent H so it really should be pronounced 'abana'. So a better example would be 'jaba' pronounced with a soft J as in 'Mexico' which is really pronounced 'Mejico'.

And awesome is an awesome word.

Welcome Stacey!

I am opening up a cookie store (building started last week - yay!), but I do have and will continue to have a day job.

I will check out the beef and potato taco.

Thanks Carlos! I would definitely have mispronounced that.

Hello Stacey.

Taco Bell depresses me now because of the pizza hut thing. It just seems so weird and desperate and I don't even want to know how everything comes together in that kitchen. speaking of work... I have yet another NEW job, and maybe one day I can share some ice sculpture fun with you, since you had mentioned that some time ago. Thanks for all of your help with the podcasts too. I appreciated your enthusiasm.

looking forward
