well, chapel hill to dc always takes us about 4 to 5 hours. One day sounds awesome. I dont have any specific ideas right now, since we are finishing a long drawn out recording project, but once that is finished (which should be in the next 2 or 3 months) then i'll be ready for a quick project and your one day deal sounds like a great idea and we could definitely do day. We'll have to think about what to record, and how to best make use of all the cool stuff you have there. Would you engineer the recording? We could go the night before, play a gig and then record the next day. or go early record then play a show. We'll talk more about this for sure, but as i said, it will have to be after the recording in progress is done. thanks! this is really something to look forward to, we love recording out of town. :)

oh well. i thought maybe you'd go for the egg shaker, though we already have several of those... studio time is very nice too. And considering we're only about 4 hours apart, very likely. How much time are we talking about?

So, do i win the anti-gearhead prize or does heidi trump me with her one answer which she never even agreed to have logged as an entry (not in public anyways)?

If i do win the anti-gearhead prize, here's my list of things that i would hope would be hte prized, in order of preference:

1. the grand piano
2. the xylophone
3. the microphone
4. the banjo
5. the rhodes
6. the kalimba
7. the egg shaker

yeah - i erred on the side of leniency. basically on the bonus item if someone guessed anything i gave bonus points. i'd really like to fire that thing up, but i'm intimidated. mostly i use it as a lamp.

i really look forward to working on something with chris, based on your glowing report...chris, do you ever make it to dc?

darn I have one of those shakers. how the heck did you get that Chris?

glad to find out what that stringed instrument is. that really baffled me.

Cherry Blossom - Chris is a fantastic musician (and I don't exaggerate) and a super nice guy (again I don't exaggerate). He played with Carlos and myself in the Texas Guinness Lovers (though he has much more interesting things on his resume). I am mad at him though for never finishing his blog on kick drum mic'ing techniques, since I could really use this knowledge.

Also CB, you were pretty lenient on the NASA bonus item. I believe my guess was a Martian Colonial synthesizer.

chris - deal! email me!
justin - scoring was not arbitrary except for the full award of 4 points i gave to everyone who said "kalimba," because who could know that was an LP kalimba? i wrote exactly how i determined the scoring. 1 point for guessing the general thing. another point for getting the brand. then two extra points if you guessed the model or exact item. exact item in most cases would have taken some research, whereas the other things you pretty much know them or don't. for most of them it would have been possible to get 4 points, and for those where it was pretty much impossible, i was equally generous with everyone.

marshall - i had originally planned to give justin and jonathan 25 point handicaps (which i wrote in the original post), because i thought they'd be able to get close to perfect scores. turns out they didn't. but even so, chris came awfully close to both of them, so that even with only a 5 point handicap, he would have won. seemed only fair because i don't think i've even ever met chris and he clearly put some real effort into the game.

Wow. This is the first time I've seen 67 beat 70. Those must be some handicaps. How were the handicaps determined? Were they disclosed in an earlier post?
