On hearing it, I remembered watching some cover band play that song in their rehearsal space when I was thirteen and being amazed by their guitarist's ability to mimic the real thing. After he was done, I went over to see what kind of guitar pedals he had: Overdrive, compressor, and flanger. I immediately went out and bought a flanger, even though I had no idea what it was supposed to do. Later I realized that he probably didn't even use it.
