Weird Fishes

During my usual scouring of the internet this week, I came across this bit about Miley Cyrus being snubbed by Radiohead at the Grammies. Apparently, Radiohead are her favorite musicians and they declined an offer to meet her. She was crushed.

This seems weird to me because it’s hard for me to imagine that when Miley Cyrus listens to the music she likes, it sounds like Radiohead and nothing like Hannah Montana–or not like any Hannah Montana that I’ve ever heard. Admittedly my experience with this particular Disney creation, as with most Disney creations, is fairly limited so I may have missed the mopey, experimental Hannah Montana songs. If I have, I encourage you to point those out to me.

This leads me to wonder whether Cyrus likes the music she makes at all. Granted, she may not have a lot of control over what her music sounds like with all the handlers and consultants that are surely surrounding her, so it could be that she doesn’t have any input into the music she makes. That seems like it would suck the fun right out of making music and turn it into a job. Imagine sitting through meetings where producers, PR people and marketers all sit down over muffins and doughnuts to discuss the best song structure for maximum market penetration. Oh, you know in your heart that they do. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be doing their duty to the stockholders.

Still, though, I’ll bet that’s a better job than mine. I wonder if it’s too late for me to launch a career as a teen pop sensation. I think I could probably still look pretty cute in a short dress.

  • I always thought Hannah Montana was just doing her thing and it caught on, like the Monkees. You know, some guys just doing their thing chasing mummies and what not, occasionally taking time to write a song that then soundtracks their zany life in a lyrically irrelevant way. What do I know.

That description of the Monkees show was a lot more entertaining than the actual show. I watched a trailer to a movie – first in a long time – and it looked aweseome. It was a Hannah Montana movie trailer.

I would love to have the time to just make … something. I can’t imagine ever getting that time. I don’t know if it’s because of that that I have moved on to loving the art behind what I’m basically good at – filing. I have started to see the cookie store’s IA.

I think I may have gone too far.

I don’t know–I kind of liked the Monkees. I think their obvious discomfort with being the prefab four made them tolerable. And the music wasn’t bad either.
