Christy Moore Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
You’re all probably sick of Irish folk music by now, but Christy Moore cannot be denied. For one thing, his vocal phrasing is so mellifluous it’s insane. First half of this mid-’70s record is folk, and includes the classics “Tippin’ It Up To Nancy” and “Bunch Of Thyme”. Second half is folk-rock. Includes “Who Put the Blood”, which I included in last week’s NapCast(tm), as well as “Van Diemen’s Land”: “young men all be aware, lest ye be drawn into a snare”.
The B-52′s Party Mix! + Mesopotamia
This combines a 1981 EP containing remixes of some of their hits, plus the David Byrne-produced Mesopotamia EP from 1982, which of course features “Mesopotamia”, one of my faves. So many classics: “Lava”, “Dance This Mess Around”, and a new fave for me: “52 Girls”. Great non-embeddable (why?!) video of them from 1978 here.
Jefferson Airplane Volunteers
Have been slowly making my way through the Airplane catalog the past few years. Currently digging on 1969′s Volunteers. It’s funny, the first track “We Can Be Together” and the last track “Volunteers” seem like practically the same song to me. I just learned that they’re singing “got a revolution, got a revolution” in the latter, rather than “counterrevolution, counterrevolution”. That makes much more sense now… The 2003 reissue has some nice live stuff from a 1969 show at the Fillmore East, by the way. They do a great version of CSN’s “Wooden Ships” which, somewhat disturbingly, I couldn’t get out of my head during the flood (a second crest is on the way, btw – fingers crossed). A somewhat lethargic live version from 1970:
Ride Carnival of Light
I am a big fan of English shoegazers Ride, but for some reason never really gave this 1994 album much of a listen. It’s less shoegazery than their earlier releases, but there’s still some great tunage here. Definitely one of those flawed gems. Here’s “Magical Spring” from Glastonbury 1994:
The next three weeks I’m hoping to have posts by a cavalcade of guest stars. Stay tuned…
