A few years ago, a friend of mine got married and asked a few of us to make mix CD’s for the wedding reception. Unfortunately, the people controlling the soundsystem (from a klezmer band that played, if I recall) were not hip to funky penguins, and my mix was yanked off during the first song! Recently had a chance to play it again in a wedding related situation, and this time the funk was not interrupted.
01. Rufus Thomas “Do the Funky Penguin (Part 1)” (Did You Heard Me?, 07)
02. Ali Hassan Kuban “Maria-Maria” (Nubian Magic, 04)
03. Yardbirds “A Certain Girl” (For Your Love, 08)
04. The Chieftains “Boffyflow and Spike” (A Chieftains Celebration, 06)
05. Screaming Jay Hawkins “Frenzy” (Voodoo Jive, 06)
06. Stereo Total “Der Schlussel” (Juke-Box Alarm, 12)
07. Dengue Fever “Glass Of Wine” (Dengue Fever, 09)
In other news, this weekend I attempted to see The Chieftains for free at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. My eyes had just about popped out of my head when I was perusing the schedule and noticed that they were playing. When my sister and I were little, my folks took us to see them, but it was way past our bedtimes, and we were so tired that we ending up going back to the car to sleep.
I was determined not to miss them this time around, as it’s not so often you get a chance to see them here, and particularly not for the low low price of free. However, great music for free in Golden Gate Park combined with great weather means large crowds, and so the parking situation was even more insane than it usually is for these types of things. After about 45 minutes driving around trying to find a spot, any spot, any where, the clock kept ticking and ticking, such that even were I to have found a spot, I wouldn’t have been able to walk or run to the park before they had finished playing. Well, maybe next year…
