This week, ah well let’s see. I’ve been listening to the Dandy Warhols’ first album Dandys Rule OK? quite a bit. I know it’s just three chords and a variation on the drone rock song from Ur, but I guess I’m a sucker for rock and/or roll. “Ride”:
Been listening to A Sides Win, a compilation from our neighbors to the north, Sloan. Pretty much the same story as above: it’s only rock ‘n’ roll, but I like it. “If It Feels Good Do It” (poor audio quality on the video, unfortunately):
Brian Eno has written a short essay, “The Death of Uncool“, in which he argues that since we now have access to all types of music all the time, “the idea that something is uncool because it’s old or foreign has left the collective consciousness”. Reminds me of what a professor of mine said with regard to the newfound popularity of Gregorian chant CD’s, lamenting that we modern musicians have the problem of having to compete for attention not only with each other, but with all music from every age of history. It does seem like there are enough people somewhere or the other on the internet to maintain a healthy fandom for any subsubsubgenre out there. Possibly in this age, only things which were cool last year could be uncool this year (although apparently Beatles-related holiday songs are an exception?).
Was also going to say a few words about Glenn Branca’s essay, “The End of Music“, but after reading it again, I don’t feel like it.
Bummed out that Mininova is taking down most of its torrents. This comes hot on the heels of The Pirate Bay quitting torrent hosting, in favor of magnet links. Torrents can be wonderful, when they enable you to find some great rarities, but can also be quite annoying, like when you’re stuck at 99.7%, as I am with the Arthur Lee & Love Hendrix Sessions torrent right now. Somebody please seed!
It’s got 8 tracks of Love supposedly playing with Hendrix, although other sources seem to indicate Hendrix is actually only on 1 track. Then there are 15 tracks live from Denmark in 1970. Great stuff, also available on the My Little Red Book bootleg. I’ve got everything 100% except “Orange Skies”. So irritating! You don’t want to delete it from your hard drive on the off chance someone with 100% happens to turn on their client some random day, so it just sits there. Some of the tracks were from a show broadcast on Danish TV, including “August”:
Also this week, Emits Showers of Sparks, Let’s Dance, an early EP from Windy & Carl, Bunnymen’s 1st, Ash Ra Tempel live stuff.
