The usual internet trawling has brought me to this series at Mix magazine. It’s a series about the way some classic songs were made. One of my favorites was “Stayin’ Alive”, which, because of various problems, features a drum loop from “Night Fever.”

Hey look, it’s some videos of Prince’s tour rehearsals in 1984.

Finally, I came across this page of Decemberist covers—as in covers done by The Decemberists and not covers of songs by The Decemberists. Who would want to cover a Decemberists song? I figured there had to be at least one good cover in that list, so in order to save you from having to listen to them all, I took one for the team and discovered that their Heart cover is pretty good.

I would like to profess my love of 70s Heart here, a love balanced by my equally vehement hatred of 80s Heart. I think the thing that made 70s Heart so good was their unusually strong Zeppelin fetish. It’s kind of ridiculous. But in the 80s, they lost their way and started hanging out with Mike Reno.

Now, if only The Decembrists could learn a few things from Zeppelin.

  • That Stayin Alive article is both hilarious and amazing. I’m gonna have to go back and listen to that song again.

I saw that Prince tour at the Summit, i think. So i’m gonna have to sit down at some point and watch all those rehearsal clips.

    • I’m ashamed to say that opening bass line (or is it guitar? I’ve never known) is one of my favorite musics ever. Just love the holy hell out of that entire soundtrack, but that first hook is incredible.
