Many moons ago, I posted about a website that lets you vote on new music. This week I bring you another, slicker version of the same idea. I feel like this or a site similar to it will take off eventually. It solves a couple problems. The first problem is where a new artist can put his music to get lots of ears listening to it. The second is how a listener can wade though the sea of crap to find things that are actually good. Both of these sites let you upload your music and then (note: impending buzzword) crowdsource the determination of relative quality. This doesn’t necessarily find you music that you might like, though; it just finds you music that most people like. It would be useful to have a feature like Last.fm that would keep track of what you like and start presenting you new things based on what people with similar interests like. Without that feature, you still have to listen to lots of things you probably don’t want to hear. Somebody will get this right.

Have you ever wondered what a website sounds like? I don’t mean a crappy MIDI file that plays when you load the page. I mean, what would an audio representation of all the things on the page sound like? Wonder no more.

Here is an article from Slate which talks about the differences between the modern versions of instruments and their historical counterparts. They make a good point. I liked the versions of those songs played on the older instruments better.

Perhaps you remember the Wilco influences video I made long ago. Well, it still gets comments from YouTube users. Most of these comments are from people who seem deeply offended, but I think the one I got this week may be my all time favorite:
Your fucking stupid. Omg you are so fucking stupid it hurts.
Who can argue with that?

I wish I had time right now to look through all of these, they look interesting. I will eventually.
As for modern instruments vs their counterparts. Very interested in this. The mother of one of my band mates is an “early music” player –plays in small ensembles with historical instruments. On the J S Bach wiki page you can find a link to a Czech orchestra playing through the Brandenburg Concertos using historical instruments and striving for an historical “vantage” –which is to say that in those times there was much more room in classical music for improv. Best version I’ve heard.
As for youtube comments. Have never, ever come across a youtube comment worth submitting. I think that video was clever. Wilco fans as a group are not very inventive.
I once slagged Wilco in the Houston Press and the article was picked up by a couple other papers in other cities. I got a small number of very offended hate letters after that. My favorite complaint was the guy who said that I obviously hated music in order to have an opinion such as mine. As if loving Wilco is an absolute.
Why do you hate music, John?
Nooo!!!!
