Built on Sand

Can’t remember when I downloaded them, but I have a couple albums by 7% Solution on my hard drive. They were an Austin band that played what I guess you’d call Texas space-rock. I remember meeting a girl from KVRX at a college radio conference thing in Austin many many moons ago (’95?) that was into them. And I think that’s probably the last time I’d heard anything about them until whenver it was I found their stuff on the internets. There’s an obvious shoegaze influenced space rock thing going on, (though with mostly clean guitars) with some heavily effected guitar (that I thought was maybe synth) that put me off a bit at first, being a bit over the top with its dreaminess signifiers. So I thought they were perhaps a bit cheesy, but over time I’ve been unable to resist, cuz I’m a sucker for this sort of thing.

“Built on Sand”

This is probably my favorite song, and I have to give major props for it lyric-checking R.E.M.’s “What If We Give It Away?”. Not sure why fans make videos like this, but at least it’s up there with good sound quality.

“Revolve”

Here they are live in Austin in 2002. More props for it guitar-checking Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun”.
