Not about the Eagles

Good news! I know I promised an Eagles post this week, but the more I thought about it, the more I dreaded writing it. I did a load of research, listening to all the old songs… and I hate them. In fact, this is the real reason you can be sure the Eagles are awful. They used to be my favorite band; now they might be my aural nemesis. I can’t say that about any of my other youthful classic rock loves. Neil Young? Fleetwood Mac? Steely Dan? Love them still. Indeed, becoming a musician made me love those bands more. Becoming knowledgeable about music and how it’s made had the opposite effect when it came to the Eagles. Almost from the moment I learned to write songs, I’ve avoided them. Hearing them again over the last few weeks has been a depressing study.

I had thought about sharing with you some of their best songs. You know, the ones that still stand up? But there aren’t any unless you count the covers (Jack Tempchin’s “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, Tom Waits’s “Old ‘55”). Well, I still love “One of these Nights”. But shouldn’t a band this popular have more than one great song? Yes. Yes they should. But they don’t. They suck, and because they were so pompous and ass-holy, you can’t even go back and like them ironically.

Admitting it makes me feel better. Thanks for listening.

Oh, and so you don’t think I’m letting you completely off the hook, I’m sharing this video my wife sent me, via Perez Hilton. Some American soldiers stationed in Afghanistan remade the already infamous “Telephone” video that originally featured Beyonce lowering her standards (and confusing her audience) with Lady Gaga. The low-rent remake is kinda awesome.

Here’s the original:

  • Yeah, a friend of mine bought that Neil Young/Devo movie on VHS for a pretty penny and lent it to me. I think I also downloaded a torrent of it at some point.

I wonder what year that CoCo clip was from. Maybe from back when it was on in Houston at 2:15 am or whatever?

    • I’m guessing this comment should go with my post. I looked for a way to associate comments with a different post, but it doesn’t look like there’s an easy way to do that.

I could never figure out why the Houston NBC station decided to put Conan on so late. Were they really making more money from whatever reruns they showed in the earlier time slot?
