June’s NAPcast is dedicated to songs that, in one way or another, embody the idea of “Dad Rock”. I think dad rock is mostly used as a pejorative—it slams music that’s allegedly dull, unadventurous, and pseudo-hip. The embodiment of the dad rock meme seems to be Wilco, and if that’s the case, then I’ve been listening to dad rock a long time. Since I was in my very early 20s, in fact.
But I can’t let other people giving me the business about my jams bum me out. I have to be true to myself. I work long hours in a suit and tie and fitted shirt, and my commute is filled with nothing but NPR and sports. When I get home I want to hear the music I remember liking. Not the crap those college bloggers are listening to, right? So put on your cardigan and your slippers. Get out your pipe and your Kindle all loaded up with Louis L’Amour. And enjoy these fine selections.

As an anthropological note, the use of the term “dad-rock” became prevalent after Pitchfork used it pejoratively in a review of Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky.

Ha ha. I just kind of took “Dad Rock” as being songs you could sing in the car with your kids.
I dig that song by The Gary; had never heard of them before…
